Lower Priced Plans and New Monetization Options

We updated our service today with several major changes that make Kitely cheaper to use, and add new ways to earn Kitely Credits.

New Subscription Plans

We’re making several changes to our subscription plans. People have told us that they prefer to be able to spend more time in-world instead of getting additional Kitely Credits each month. Therefore, we increased the amount of free time included in each plan, and eliminated the KC that they used to provide. The Bronze Plan now includes 30 hours of monthly use (as Minutes) instead of the 25 hours that it previously provided (in Minutes and KC). Similarly, the Silver Plan now includes 120 hours instead of the 100 hours that it used to provide. This means that the new Bronze and Silver plans provide 20% more time for the same amount of money as before. The new plans will take effect automatically for all existing users on August 1.

The most exciting changes, however, are in our more advanced plans. We’ve eliminated the Platinum Plan, and changed the Gold Plan to include 20 free regions and unlimited time for just $35 / month. This means that you can now get unlimited time on Kitely for 65% less than what we previously charged for the Platinum Plan. Existing Platinum and Gold plan users can continue using their existing plans if they wish, but we recommend switching to the new Gold Plan since it’s cheaper.

Here are the new plans:

Price Changes for Creating and Storing Worlds

In preparation for when we start providing bigger worlds, this update also includes a few world-related price changes. The price for creating a world is now 10 KC (up from 1 KC). Similarly, the price for storing a world is now 10 KC per day, instead of 1 KC per day. This means that each additional world beyond the worlds provided by the plan’s free quota costs about 300 KC per month, which is equivalent to $1 per month when buying KC at our best discount price. As before, users aren’t charged for creating or storing worlds that are included in their plan.

Buying More KC at Once

It is now possible to buy up to $500 worth of Kitely Credits at once (up from $50). As will be explained later, there is a new use for KC so some people will want to buy many of them at once. This change makes it more convenient to do so.

More Free Time for New Free Plan Users

New Free Plan users now get 6 hours of free usage in the month in which they create their account (up from 2 hours). This time is only usable in the first month; afterwards Free Plan users get 2 hours each month, as before.

Payment Methods

It is now possible to pay for the monthly subscription using Kitely Credits instead of PayPal. You can choose which payment method to use in the Settings page. There are three options:

PayPal – your PayPal account will be billed at the beginning of each month. This is how Kitely has worked until now.

PayPal, or Kitely Credits whenever possible – at the beginning of each month, if you have enough Kitely Credits then you will be charged using KC at a rate of 300 KC per $1. Otherwise, your PayPal account will be billed. This option is useful for virtual world business owners: it enables them to use the KC that they earn in order to pay for Kitely. People who earn enough KC won’t have to pay for Kitely using real-world money at all.

Only Kitely Credits – you will be charged using KC at the beginning of each month. If you don’t have enough KC then your plan will be canceled. This option isn’t recommended because it can cause you to lose your plan just because you happened to be low on KC on a particular month (although we do send a warning email before that happens). This option is intended for people who prefer paying for their plan multiple months in advance, and for people who can’t use PayPal subscriptions because they didn’t link a credit card to their PayPal account. If you want to use this option then you should buy a large amount of Kitely Credits in advance, to avoid running out. This is why we increased the number of Kitely Credits that can be bought at once.

Setting a Price for Visiting Worlds

We are introducing a new way of earning KC with virtual worlds: by charging a per-minute access price for visiting a world. In the world’s Access controls you can now set a price in KC for visiting that world. Visitors will pay those KC each minute that they are in your world. This capability has great potential, and we’re excited to see how it will be put to use. For example:

  • Musical performances
  • Conferences
  • Lectures
  • Games
  • And other virtual activities

In addition to charging users for visiting your world, you can also pay users who visit your world. This can be used, for example, to automatically pay performers for the time they spend performing in your world.

In the following example, the world manager is putting on a concert:

Charging a price per-minute (instead of via fixed-price tickets) has many benefits. First, for the visitors, this entails less risk: they can sample the event, and if they want to leave then they’ve only paid a small price. For the world manager, this means it’s easier to get people to sample the event. It’s also possible to let the event start for free, and only turn on premium pricing once the main attraction begins. When that happens users are asked if they agree to remain in the world:

This means the performer can create a direct connection with the world’s visitors before asking them to pay, which increases the chance that they’ll want to stay.

Kitely charges a 10% fee for Kitely Credits that are earned using these monetization options. In other words, for every 10 KC that the world manager or performer earn using these tools, they get 9 KC and Kitely keeps 1 KC. This fee doesn’t apply to any of the other ways people can transfer KC to each another. The 10% fee applies only to the optional monetization features described above.

Now this starts to look like something I can afford. Under the previous plans I couldn’t do 20 regions. Just waiting for mega-regions and I should be able to do something involving driving as part of role play.

That’s great top hear Sarge. Our next build is focused on providing bigger worlds. :-)

Your new monetization features coincide with the following support question:

How about Kitely Monetization contingent to Virtual Event Project Roles?

How many additional roles can be added?

I found the Add Visitors [Roles] button meanwhile, and 4 roles can be added.

As a long time performer, coming up on 6 years, in Second Life, being able to monetize my performances is high up on the list of necessities. Can you give an approximate date when cashing out to real world currency will be available?

      Hi Seth,

Love your music, can’t wait to hear it on Kitely :-)

The ability to convert Kitely Credits to other forms of currency will be
provided by registered exchanges managed by third parties. We are currently in discussions with several such potential partners but I can’t give an approximate deployment date until things have been finalized. What I can say is that getting a trustworthy virtual currency exchange into Kitely is a high priority for us.

      • Gerald Bieniek

Is it permissible to act as that third party provider between friends or whatnot? Specifically, is it against the ToS to trade Credits for cash or Bitcoin from someone else?

        • http://www.kitely.com Ilan Tochner

          Hi Gerald,

Due to changing regulations relating to virtual currencies in the United States we decided to change our plans and keep Kitely Credits as a purely virtual currency that can only be used in
connection with our service. Doing otherwise may subject us to regulatory requirements which we don’t wish to have to comply with. For details see: http://forums.kitely.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=261&p=1649

Therefore, KC may be purchased from us and used inside our service but may not be refunded, traded, exchanged, or transferred for real money or real money equivalents. This means that our TOS doesn’t permit you to trade them for cash or Bitcoins.

Having said that, the upcoming Kitely Market will allow merchants to sell their virtual goods for either KC or US dollars. Revenue from items that are priced in USD will be automatically deposited into the merchant’s PayPal account. For details about the upcoming Kitely Market see: http://www.kitely.com/virtual-world-news/2013/01/20/kitely-market-early-bird-promotion/

I recently upgraded to the Silver Plan. While travelling around Kitely I have noticed that my KC amount is decreasing?
I am still pretty much in noob mode but I have not been to any places that ask me to pay.
    I currently have 5 worlds.
Can you suggest why this might be happening and how I can stop it?

Ilan nice meeting you the other night, I do like this place :)

    • Dee Darwin

It seems like I am paying group members 1KC a min. Heading in world to check group settings :)

      • http://www.kitely.com Ilan Tochner

Thanks Dee, it was nice meeting you and your friends inworld as well.

Unless you use the “Select Price” option you will only see the options for “Normal” (your visitors cover their own time using their own Minutes or Kitely Credits) and “Free” (you cover your visitors time using your own Kitely Credits).

Were any of your worlds set up to pay other people when they are visited?

      • Dee Darwin

        Found it **

Providing Minutes to users so they can visit your worlds for free    1 KC / Minute

I’ll leave this it might help others – Dee

        • http://www.kitely.com Ilan Tochner

          That’s very nice of you.

Please make sure to have enough KC to cover your visitors’ time inside your worlds. If you run out of KC then other people, which you selected to provide Free access for, won’t be able to enter those worlds.

From a procurement viewpoint, it seems to me that the entity Free Regions in each Price Plan (1, 2, 10, 20) are incremented unfavorably, Free Regions should be incremented rectangular-wise (1, 2×2, 3×3, 4×4, 5×5 etc.), and then also enable $1 Additional Regions. You have a $3 Quad-Sim @ 2 hours use (Free Plan), and a $7 Quad-Sim @ 30 hours use (Bronze Plan).

    • http://www.kitely.com Ilan Tochner

      Hi James,

A lot of thought went into the pricing of each plan. While we’re sure Bronze Plan holders would be happy to pay less to have a 4-region world, that would not make sense for us financially at this time.

      • http://www.facebook.com/James.P.OReilly James OReilly

Interesting viewpoint of yours, are you really sure that processing from inside-out (your revenue sheet first) is Sustainably Better than coming from outside-in (World Owner revenue sheet first)?

The Use Case approach, which matters, means processing from outside-in, putting the World Owner revenue sheet first, thus establishing a Sustainable Base for Kitely’s revenue sheet.

      • http://www.facebook.com/James.P.OReilly James OReilly

        Hi Ilan,

        I got this procurement request:

“Help me do the math! If I have 50 students and they use 10 hours a month in Kitely each, how much does it cost me?”

What use case & procurement-driven answer does this have?

        • http://www.kitely.com Ilan Tochner

          Hi James,

          With the current plans:

If 50 students each spend 2 hours on the Free Plan and 8 hours on the teacher’s expense then the total cost for having those students in one of their own worlds or on the teacher’s world will be:

50 (students) * 8 (hours per month covered by the teacher) * $0.20 (cost per student per hour when buying KC at max discount rate) = $80 / month.

If some of those hours are spent on worlds belonging to other people that subsidize access to their worlds (there are dozens of such worlds on Kitely) then the cost to the teacher would be lower.

When making the comparison with other grids, the teacher should also take into account that her 50 students will each have their own region on Kitely so they wouldn’t need to share a single region when building.

          • http://www.facebook.com/James.P.OReilly James OReilly

            Hi Ilan,

I think the pedagogical Training Setting is such, that all students are in a single group in one World at the same time, and not alone on their own separate Worlds.

          • http://www.kitely.com Ilan Tochner

            Hi James,

Effective immersive education is best done in team learning activities and team learning activities are best done in small groups of 5-7 students. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Team_learning

Part of the reason that educators come to Kitely is that they can afford to hold multiple such small-group activities concurrently inside Kitely. There are several university professors who give each student group (and sometime even single students) their own world to work in.

It is much easier for a group of 5 students to practice language skills than for a group of 20 students. In the smaller group each student gets more time to actually practice with others.

          • http://www.facebook.com/James.P.OReilly James OReilly

            Hi Ilan,

Well, this procurement request states 50, so I am asking for your offer based on the Request-for-Information RFI and its present client specifications.

          • http://www.kitely.com Ilan Tochner

            Hi James,

You can cram several groups working on different things into a single region but that doesn’t mean you’ll get the same benefit as you would from having each group working in its own region. Just as an example, if you give each group a similar assignment and don’t want them to copy from each other than having them share a single space will not be very effective.

I gave you a quote for 50 people all on Free Plans each spending 10 hours inside world(s) where the teacher covers access costs. If they spend less time in such worlds then the cost in Kitely Credits per month will be lower. If they spend more time in such worlds then the cost will be higher.

Our prices are published on our home page, details for all possible other charges are covered in the Learn More link on that page.

            Hi Ilan,

Well I had time to watch and attend its use…

It was effective because the chance of seeing a Range of Group Results enhanced the Eureka & Group Dynamic Effect due to the different results presented.

I’m afraid your response does not lend to the Request specifications made.

It really doesn’t make sense if you conjure your own specifications to avoid a sensible response to a client request.

            Up to you…

          • http://www.kitely.com Ilan Tochner

            James,

I don’t believe I avoided giving you a sensible response. You asked for a quote for a certain usage scenario and I gave you one. I also explained how the cost will be calculated if the usage scenario is different from the one you had asked me about.

            Hi Ilan,

I don’t have the answer needed to pass on.

As a help desk, I am intermediary for two sides:

I see a range of answers on your part depending on the procurement configuration put forward on your part…

This client has no overview of according Price Plan & Monetization settings and possibilities.

All these settings need to be drilled down and unraveled for budget planning and one-step implementation. No guessworking in between.
