I would've loved N scale, but HO was cheaper and more available. Plus, it was close enough to my Matchbox cars in size so I could make the whole layout work.
I've seen train sets...somewhere. You might need to do some hypergridding to find what you're looking for. Maybe try Adachi? I can't recall where I last saw them. And bear in mind there are three primary physics models here, with UBODE being the latest. Vehicles built for, say, Bulletsim won't work ...
Welcome, Paul! Sounds like a fun place, and I look forward to seeing it get built. You're absolutely right: way more bang for your buck with open sim! I shudder to think about the literal thousands of dollars I spent in tier to LL over the years before finally making the switch. There's no going back!
