I know very little about vehicles but curious about this. Presumably you would be using either llSetPos or llSetKeyFramedMotion, probably the former, combined with osGetTerrainHeight to monitor terrain and llCastRay to detect prims. I may be wrong but it sounds laggy. Something like Supercar Plus is...

With the proviso that I've never tried this with mesh, I'd guess it's a matter of changing the texture on a particular face using llSetTexture (assuming it's not a linkset)?
