Potential Hypergrid asset corruption?

Post by Dot Matrix »

I saw this new issue on G+ OpenSim Virtual, posted by Ferd: https://plus.google.com/+FredBeckhusen/ ... 2bMD8vk11j

Mantis: http://opensimulator.org/mantis/view.php?id=7657

Is it something that might affect Kitely users when they use the Hypergrid?

Hi Dot,

It sounds like a problem that is spreading malformed assets between grids so we'd have to investigate this bug further before we can rule out it affecting Kitely users who bring in items from other grids.

Thanks, Ilan. It sounds like a potentially serious problem.

No such problematic items are created in Kitely, and these items will work in Kitely if brought over from another grid, but they will not work when taken to a grid that is hosted on Windows.

So the take-away is:
Avoid building on a grid hosted on windows.
I did not know that anybody would do that.

The problem isn't with grids hosted on Windows but rather with a bug that created problems when transferring items between Linux and Windows based grids. The takeaway, IMO, is to keep in mind that not all OpenSim based grids run the same version of OpenSim on the same environment and that that can cause problems in some cases (especially when people teleport and move content between these grids).

Reflecting on some of the threads that were created in our forums over the past few weeks, problems that have been resolved in Kitely still exit in many other grids and this can cause issues when transferring items to other places and expecting them to work the same as they do in Kitely. For example, the minimum object adjustment size in Kitely (0.001m) is smaller than what it is in some other grids (0.01m). That particular problem can be easily solved using a simple configuration setting.

There are, however, problems that require actual programming to fix and Kitely includes proprietary patches for more than 400 such issues that still exist in OpenSim core (not counting all the issues that are resolved by the fact that we use our own cloud-based assets and inventory systems instead of the systems included with OpenSim). Unfortunately, some problems can't be fixed on our end alone and require other grids to be patched as well. We've contributed quite a few such patches over the years to OpenSim but there are still many OpenSim installations that use outdated OpenSim versions that don't include these patches.

As a follow-up to the original post, Ferd mentioned today on Google+:
Ferd wrote:An important Hypergrid fix has just been released for 0.8.1. This prevents the spreading of funky assets around Opensim and should greatly improve the Hypergrid experience.

After what my avi has gone through the past few weeks, what with odd invisible lagging attachments and other weirdness, I have no desire to bring anything back from the hypergrid anymore. It's like we need to pass through a 'avatar health check' before returning.

Hi Birch,

We've resolved the issues that caused the problems you encountered so that the same type of problems should not recur with other objects brought over from other grids. As such, you shouldn't fear saving objects from other grids in your Kitely avatar's inventory.

How does this affect SoaS running on Windows? The current version is 0.8 post-fixes. Can we still work with it offline and then upload OARs to Kitely? Also, does anyone know if SoaS runs on Windows 10? So many questions... :o
