Connection Failures

I travel quite a bit. This week I'm traveling again and for the first time I'm seeing some failures that I suspect are WIFI related.

I've always been able to connect using WIFI and this time was no exception except that I was unable to load even the smallest of OAR files. So, my technical question is this, "Is there a limit to how slow a connection can be before .OAR files time out?" Currently, the Marriott I'm staying at has a lot of people in residency and my best connection speeds are between 9-24kps. It is enough to get inworld, enough to access the forum. However, I rarely get past 17% percent on an upload. The file "times out," or "fails." The WIRED connection in the hotel is just as slow and the manager has called for service. So, I guess my question is two-fold.

1. Is there a time limit for an OAR upload before the file "times out?"
2. Can the system sense when a connection is too slow which triggers a failure message?

FWIW, I'm currently connected to the forum using the personal hot spot feature on my cell phone, which is faster than the WIFI here.

Hi Michael,

There is a timeout for OAR uploads that take too long to complete but our system doesn't disconnect connections just because they have a slow upload speed.

That said, given your very slow reported upload speed, unless you are uploading small OAR files I'd recommend you find an alternative WiFi connection at a nearby restaurant or coffee shop.

I actually used my cell phone (got 60kps) and it loaded first try. Thanks Ilan.

I live in a very rural part of the country. Broadband isn't available here. I have a satellite connection to the internet. It does fine for most aspects of building in Kitely (or SL, etc.). I can't load a RAW terrain file, however, and I'm told the very slow ping response time in satellite connections is the cause of it. I can live with that. I don't think I can load an OAR file, either, though. I've spent dozens of hours placing objects and I'm concerned about losing that work. Am I going to run into trouble when trying to save what I've done to an OAR? Not even sure how to do that yet.

Hi Mally,

Downloading an OAR file from Kitely should be faster for you than uploading one into Kitely, and thus less likely to fail.

To create an OAR file of your Kitely world go to the Files tab of your world's Manage World dialog and click the Export World button. Keep that browser page open and you'll be notified once the OAR file is ready for you to download. Please make sure you read the World Export Report when you do this so you'll know if anything was filtered out of your OAR file.

That's slick. I hope that when I need to use this, it'll be to make it available for someone else to use who wants to.
