Re: Question re premium members and access to sims

Two things:

1) We really need to get some links to freebie worlds in the new KWC - worlds that are open to any Kitely member, not just premium members. People are not gonna react well to the idea of having to pay real cash to get access to stuff advertised as "free".

2) I agree completely with those who say that it's a really bad idea to have any worlds highlighted in KWC that are not accessible to any Kitely account. Again, it seems too much like you're forcing people to pay for membership to get anything useful.

Back in 2007 I started playing an MMORPG called RuneScape (which I'm still playing 7 years later). I started out as a free member of RuneScape but didn't last five full days in that status. By the fifth day I got tired of not having access to so many things and became a paying member of RuneScape. It could easily have gone the other way and I could have stopped playing rather than paying for membership. But after five days I was irritated enough that *something* was going to happen. ;)

There are many differences between RuneScape and Kitely, needless to say. One of the major ones is that a paying membership in RuneScape only cost $5/month, which is a big difference from $20/month when you are talking about online entertainment. So it wasn't too hard for me to decide to just pony up the $5/month and become a paying member for full access. If the price had been $20/month I would have been a lot more hesitant to jump in so quickly, and much more likely to eventually leave in frustration.

The other major difference is that RuneScape already had an established community within the game - even free game worlds were loaded with other players much of the time. So the social aspect was there to see, even for free. Until Kitely gets a critical mass of residents to provide the ready social infrastructure, you need to be careful not to do anything else to scare people off - the lack of people on most worlds much of the time is already a huge barrier to people deciding to settle here.

The world boards in the live KWC were all working correctly, but I've updated them all to the latest version anyway

..as to where the players are, I'm working on that too..
..only so many hours in a day..

if premium worlds are to be removed from the showcase, we need replacements.. more work for Dot, less for me :)

qualifier to this post - I realize I am not privy to the business model and why it is necessary to have paid per minute worlds, so if my comment is out of sync please disregard :)
All of the people I have brought to Kitely have been terribly confused, put off and did not come back - main reason I think is the confusion about the membership plans and the pay per minute of some worlds. They did get over the speed bump of viewer access to their credit. It is also possible they are established in another grid and the thought of starting over as a noob is just too overwhelming? Many do not have the skills to "build their own" either. So add to that the anxiety of the viewer grid manger set up, the confusion of plans and how they work is all too much of a hassle?
Is it possible to eliminate the pay per minute? Could this loss of revenue be made up someplace else? The difference of $4.00 a month between a regular member who has the $14.95 a month plan and one who is a premium member paying $20 a month seems negligible. Would it make sense to just have a premium plan for $20 and do away with the $14.95 plan while making all worlds visitable by non-plan members?
At $20 a month for 5 regions this is a bargain, best rate of all VR's. Imagine 5 regions in sl at $1,500 a month? The value in Kitely is immense!
A person comes to kitely, can use everything for free, want land ante up and pay $20 a month. No confusion. At $20 a month it is a bargin!!!
Or, is it possible to give new entries to Kitely a grace period of unlimited access for a period of time? A week, month? Let them have full access during this time to figure stuff out, meet others and possibly decide they like Kitely. Let them see the tremendous value that is available to them by becoming a landowner at $14.95 or premium member at $20.00? This would make entry into Kitely more attractive?
I am not here in Kitely for the mass of people social stuff so for me I am quite happy the way it is. It is a remarkable value at any level of current membership!!! Those who do not see that Kitely offers the best in management, performance and value not to mention the cutting edge of the Market Place and what delivery to other girds portends, well let them pay more someplace else due to their confusion and unwillingness to figure it out. Harsh I know however that is life yes?

It was the boards at the landing point that didn't seem to be working - the ones with tutorials or ? in them.

Thanks for the feedback, Ada. The info boards badly need updating to reflect the new account options.

Some will simply be deleted since they are no longer relevant.

Others are being replaced by an events board and (potentially) a board showing active public worlds -- Dundridge is working on these.

Oh, THOSE boards.

I made the info board but not the info board script :)

PS: The ones at the (live) landing point (the round landing point with the bridges) don't actually have scripts in them. (currently?)

Hi oopsee,

The Metered World option enables us to provide worlds for a price that is proportional to our cost of hosting those worlds. This means we aren't forced to charge a fixed monthly price for unknown server usage, which in turn frees us from having to charge enough to not lose money on hosting worlds in the event they become popular. The reason we enable Premium Account members to visit Metered Worlds for free is that the cost associated with their usage of these worlds is already covered by their Premium Account subscription. People on the Regular Account, however, do not have any such subscription to cover the costs associated with their keeping a Metered World active and therefore we need to have that world's manager cover those hosting expenses.

Eliminating Metered Worlds would mean that world managers would lose a cost saving option and there would be a lot less interesting worlds to visit on Kitely.

HI all,

I don't mean to "stir the pot," but I am a Regular member because one sim and 15K prims is all that I will ever need. That being said, I (and possibly Many others) would be more than happy to pay an additional $5/month to also have Premium status. Paying $20/month is still dirt cheap compared to that "other" VR. :-) Perhaps some food for thought, Ilan?
