I found Arielle's comment particularly pertinent in the context of community and Kitely:

People tend to value more what they pay for, than that which is free. Grids admins that invite and appreciate the volunteer efforts of their members, will have that appreciation returned to them in kind. When a grid allows its members to contribute their time and efforts into the success of the grid, a feeling of community comes as a result.
