Forced Log Outs

Post by Michael Timeless »

Having worked IT for a few years, a few years ago, I understand the necessity of maintenance. What I would like to suggest is a simple warning, even a minute or two before being forced off the system. Two nights in a row, no warning, blam, I'm knocked off because the server is going down. Even a minute would be enough time to release the parts I was trying to link together. Perhaps, if this is an automatic thing, a quick notice, that in "X" minutes server maintenance will begin. Usually, I'm a night owl, Central Standard Time, so, I really do understand this is not peak time for most people. The part that is frustrating is that even if I jump to another world to do some work there is no guarantee I won't get bounced there as well.
Again, not a criticism, I believe in backups and maintenance, my home system has more backups and redundancy than my work systems. Just a minutes warning would go a long way.

Thanks. :D

Hi Michael,

First, thank you for your understanding. We've had some issue with Amazon sporadically deactivating some of our servers with only a couple minutes notice over the last few days. It didn't happen a lot and it only happened to a few of the servers, but it did happen. We've taken steps to switch to other server types to reduce the chance of this happening again while we investigate the cause of these service interruptions. You didn't get a notice because our system is programmed to automatically save your world data if it gets such notices from Amazon in order to avoid world state data loss. Had we given you a prior notice when we were notified about it then we may not have had time to save the world state before Amazon shut down the server running your world.

To be clear, this isn't something that should happen. You've just encountered the automatic response we've designed in case Amazon sends us a notice that they're shutting down one of our servers (we like to support all their API message options so we minimize damage if/when the unexpected happens).

Thanks Ilan. On the bright side, it did cause me to get some probably needed sleep. ;)
