Hi Snoots,
Do you get different results when you open a texture that has been accessed recently (but isn't in your viewer cache) and one that hasn't been opened recently?
TEXTURE REZZING DATA-- Firestorm Viewer latest versions

TEST #1:
2020-10-19 7:45-7:50am
LOCATION: Weefolk Township, Wellspring

Rezzing a 1024x512 texture I just uploaded: 17 seconds following end of upload and double-clicking on texture to view.

Rezzing same 1024x512 texture after waiting a few minutes: 17 seconds
(Avatar position had not changed. No other textures were rezzed in interim.)

Prior to test avatar had been at location for quite some time, with all local textures fully loaded.

------------------
TEST #2: OSgrid
Cleared cache. Set Draw Distance to 32m prior to logging in. Logged in to OSgrid on an empty parcel, nothing within 512m.
Rezzed textures directly from inventory, using stopwatch timer.

#1: 1024x512 1.5 seconds
#2: 1024x512 1.5 seconds
#3: 512x512 1 second
#4: 512x512 1.5 seconds
#5: 512x512 1.5 seconds
#6 512x512 1.6 seconds
#7: 512x512 .9 seconds
#8: 512x512 1.4 seconds

Starting over from texture #1:
#1: Instantly
#2: .5 seconds
#3: .7 seconds
#4: 1.2 seconds
#5: 1.4 seconds
#6: 1 second
#7: .9 seconds
#8: 1.5 seconds

------------------

TEST #3: Similar to Test 2 on Kitely.
Cleared cache. Set Draw Distance to 32m prior to logging in. Logged in to Kitely at Wellspring Sandbox. Nothing within 128m.
Rezzed textures directly from inventory, using stopwatch timer.

#1: 1024x512 12 seconds
#2: 256x128 2.2 seconds
#3: 256x256 8 seconds
#4: 512x512 14 seconds
#5: 512x512 11 seconds
#6: 1024x512 14 seconds
#7: 1024x512 5 seconds
#8: 1024x1024 8 seconds

Starting over from texture #1:
#1: 1.5 seconds
#2: Instantly
#3: 4.1 seconds
#4: 4.8 seconds
#5: 1.7 seconds
#6: 11 seconds <---
#7: 2.3 seconds
#8: Instantly <---

------------------

TEST #4: Similar to Tests 2 &3 on Second Life
On a platform 500m in the sky, nothing within 256m

#1: 512x512 1.1 seconds
#2: 1024x512 1.3 seconds
#3: 1024x512 1.4 seconds
#4: 512x512 1.7 seconds
#5: 1024x512 .9 seconds
#6: 1024x512 1.4 seconds
#7: 1024x512 1.4 seconds
#8: 1024x512 1.5 seconds

Starting over from texture #1:
All textures loaded either instantly, in less than a second, or faster than first timing.
Fast enough I had difficulty timing them so gave it up as "qood enough". ; )

Overall impression: What we are seeing on Kitely could be a bottleneck, but takes more the form of "erratic". All figures however showed much slower than OSgrid, which was comparable to SL.

Since SL with its immense asset load performed well within acceptable parameters, this would indicate issues within the Opensim product, Firestorm, or both. However, I was using the SL version of Firestorm on SL, so if it's a Firestorm issue (which from what other users post, it partially is), then it is specific to the Opensim version of Firestorm. But since the same version of Firestorm was used for OSgrid and Kitely, data points to a bottleneck or erratic asset fetching/display in the Kitely system. However...

Taking the analysis one step further: since other posters report no texture load problems using other viewers, this might indicate a compatibility issue between FirestormOS and Kitely. Or it could be a problem with Firestorm that the OSgrid devs have located and fixed... or a problem with Opensim that other Viewer devs are aware of and have fixed. Whatever the problem, it is evident someone somewhere has both identified the problem and come up with a solution... which might be good news. The solution could be as close as a few inquiries to other devs. : )

Thank you for the additional info Snoots. Is your viewer configured to use HTTP assets?

Yes it is (as far as I know). But I wouldn't mind a review to make sure I have all the possibilities set.

(I just learned there are FOUR different places in Firestorm to set Hover Height... and at least two of them aren't compatible with each other and at least two don't show up in other avatar's viewers. sigh)

So yeah, any instructions helpful. :D

First, in the Advanced Menu enable Show Developer Menu.

Next, in the Developer Menu enable both HTTP Textures and HTTP Inventory.

Then restart your viewer.

Please let me know if any one of these options was disabled in your viewer.

Additional test:

Two people ran this test at two different locations.

Rez a standard cube prim. Drag a random texture from inventory to a side of that prim. This was done many times using many textures, by both people.

Average time to texture fully rezzing on the prim: 24 seconds.

PS-- HTTP shows checked on both.

I have both set in my Firestorm viewer. It takes forever to build when I have to texture things. I was trying to cycle through some textures yesterday and it forever for me to see the texture - felt close to over a minute each. HOWEVER, Prax was able to view the texture rezzed on the single MESH floor much faster - maybe 15 seconds. We were not doing timing.

I just tried applying a 512x512 to one face of a cube. It took 1 minute 11 seconds to rez.

Could it be that I am sharing a server with 3 others (I am doing this on an Advanced World) and there is something going on with that server or one or more of the others are causing an issue?

I also tried rezzing a 1024x512 image just be double-clicking. I was not applying it and I opened that image earlier today.
It took 24 seconds to fully rez.

TEST #5: Rezzing textures from a box

#1: 128x128 solid black 11 seconds
#2: 128x128 sculpty instantly
#3: 512x512 14 seconds
#4: 512x512 5 seconds
#5: 1024x512 6 seconds
#6: 1024x1024 10 seconds
#7: 1024x1024 7.5 seconds
#8: 1024x512 15 seconds
#9: 256x128 10 seconds <---
#10: 256x128 2.6 seconds <---
#11: 256x128 10 seconds

Note about #9 and #10: They were extremely similar textures-- name signs by same creator, but significantly different load times.
Texture #11 echoed #9 in load time. Again, third name sign by same creator.

TEST #6: Rezzing sculpty textures from a box

I had a box of sculpty textures all measuring 16x256 (very small).
Average rezzing time of all textures in the box when double-clicked: 8 to 10 seconds. None took less than 8 seconds.

Test #7: Concurrent testing

Alexina and I were in the same sandbox. She rezzed a prim and applied a texture and we both timed to the point of full rez.

This test was repeated for a total of 5 trials. Each time both of us registered similar rezzing times (within a second or two of each other, average 15 to 17 seconds). So texture rezzing didn't differ significantly from one user to another in the same environment.

Was this test conducted in the Kitely Merchants Sandbox as well? (I want to see whether the issue relates to what other things might be running in the world when you do this).

I tried to log into the Kitely Merchants sandbox and it wouldn't allow me to log in. So I ran the tests at our large-area no-lag sandbox. The tests run on OSgrid were run in a similar large-area no-lag sandbox, as were the tests on SL. This has the advantage of the tests being run under "normal region" conditions.
