Front Page for Viewer

I have had a few occurrences over the last few days of Kitely being down when I tried to login. Searching for answers found the Kitely website offline as well. In the first instance I discovered, after finding the blog, that an opensim upgrade was occurring and have attributed the other outages to the same thing; fix-ups going on.

That said it would have been beneficial (and a little less disconcerting) to have some form of Kitely front page in the viewer that told me the world was offline and the reason for it. I will subscribe to the blog from now on but not all will or want to do this. I know the maintenance was more than likely performed at a quiet time for most Kitely users but down here in the Antipodes that's more often when I do most of my work. A little pre-login heads up wouldn't go amiss *smiles.

Aaron

Hi Aaron,

I apologize for the downtime, it's rare that that happens without prior warning.

We usually try to give a day's notice before doing system updates and aim to roll out updates on Fridays at 12:01am PST (midnight right after Thursday ends). The recent downtimes have been a result of having to roll out multiple fixes to problems that we detected with OpenSim 0.7.6 after already rolling out this updated OpenSim version on our production system. See: http://www.kitely.com/virtual-world-new ... -features/ and http://www.kitely.com/forums/viewtopic. ... t=10#p6736.

The reason the updates were unscheduled was that our system was behaving very erratically and required a fix as soon as we finished developing one (and we didn't know in advance when that would be).

I suggest following both our forums and our Twitter account (https://twitter.com/Kitely) for updates.

Thanks for the response Ilan. Have read through all that the update posts.

Have you considered the possibility I mentioned; creating a front page that will show when the viewer is first booted up. Now that web logins aren't able to be performed and opening the viewer will be the consistent way of accessing Kitely I would suggest that this would be a good way of keeping people up to date on some of the essentials.

Regards
Aaron

Hi Aaron,

People need to configure their viewer to access our Gird server in order for such a web page to be displayable in the first place. Once they've done that the rest is just entering a username and password.

Yes, there is and it should be automatically configured when you connect to the grid.

For reference, the Login Page URL is: http://www.kitely.com/viewer_login

ah, mine wasn't but that's ok, and I just added it...better than the BSOD I was getting previously..lol

[BSOD usually meaning blue screen of death but in this case it was black]

ps I would still love to see some kinds of stats...if only region totals, it would be nice-)) [I know, this is a broken record I say whenever I get the chance and am in the mood]-))

You may need to refresh the page in order for the proper one to load.
