Uh... scripting a lion? anyone?
The 10 year old daughter of a friend of mine is building on some of my land. She made a lion and asked me to script it. Silly child. I was wondering if there are scripting tutorials or classes any of you would recommend for a very bright 10 year old.

Re: Uh... scripting a lion? anyone?
I am betting she would like the thing to roar and walk around. What else do lions do? She has sharks from Ocean engineering and she turned off their attack mode, so am guessing she would not like the lion to attack. Maybe it could purr like a kitten and be petted?
My thought was that she needs to learn some basic scripting skills before she worries about scripting a lion. But she is excited as all heck about the lion, so we work with what we have.
I know sl has scripting classes. Do those happen in Kitely too?

Re: Uh... scripting a lion? anyone?
or just give it a roar and a random gait ? That should be easy.
Get a microphone on a kitten ??
Dunno.

Perhaps try Flash Scratch to LSL: http://www.free-lsl-scripts.com/Secondl ... efault.htm

Re: Uh... scripting a lion? anyone?
Oh yeah, SCRATCH is an amazing graphical programming language for kids, and someone did a translator from scratch to LSL once, so she could learn programming in scratch and then apply it to Kitely. That is a long journey, and it does not teach you the API (all the library routines) or what it is capable of.
Another thought: There is a script in SL called "puppet master". It is a script that records all the positions of your child prims, then you move them all slightly, record the positions again... repeat a few more times. Then the script plays back all those positions. There was apparently a free version and a for sale version, I don't know what the differences are. If you could find that free script it might be possible for her to use that system to animate the lion.
I've never used puppet master, but it sounds like a pretty simple script, so if you found an SL version it would have a good chance of working in Kitely.

Re: Uh... scripting a lion? anyone?
Re Scratch, I think that's the way to go initially. It's a little laggy and it doesn't teach you LSL but that's not really the point. As I recall you can also use it to rez temporary prims but you can have plenty of fun creating followers and simple gizmos.
I think you are thinking of XD Fusion's Puppeteer which does indeed come with a freebie version, Open Prim Animator, although there are a number of similar animation scripts. http://www.free-lsl-scripts.com/cgi/fre ... plx?ID=588 and the author seems to be no longer active in SL.
The two approaches are complementary.
Incidentally do try Primland on FleepGrid when the hypergrid is enabled. It should become available as an OAR as well. The latter stages include a basic intro to scripting.

Re: Uh... scripting a lion? anyone?
hmm, that "appears" to be the one that came to my mind also...I played with that, or a similar one, a bit back but it frustrated me.Graham Mills wrote:although there are a number of similar animation scripts. http://www.free-lsl-scripts.com/cgi/fre ... plx?ID=588 and the author seems to be no longer active in SL.
It had to do with a stick figure [or whatever else you can imagine] and, hmmmm, I wish I could remember who did full instructions with scripting, but it escapes me...but you recorded it's movements and then set them...and it would move around as you recorded and say text in local, and I guess it could do much more.
btw, that link you give, Graham, is to a guy who is actually still very involved in SL, but also in OS, and is on g+ ..I think this will put you to him https://plus.google.com/u/0/b/113904954 ... usen/posts
Very nice guy, and extremely good with scripting stuff, and sharing all sorts of things around the Meta. He is a friend of Nara http://www.narasnook.com/ and they have done several projects together.
So someone might get with him, as a start, and see how he feels about helping out-))
