Can someone tell me what the advantage is to having actual hypergates? I mean you can get where you want to go by using the map, so what is the advantage to the gate?

The main function I can see for hypergates is to help build Hypergrid communities. For example, consider the literary and storytelling community of the virtual worlds. There are places in Kitely, but there are also places in other grids. I am (slowly) developing a quadrant on Cookie II for that community. It will have TPs and hypergates to other places (such as Seanchai, and your place).

Functions:

Publicize these locations to new people who may not know about them yet.
Show the presence of a community (people connected by common interests).
Make the visit as easy as going next door.

One of the basic rules of promotion: Make it easy for people to do what you want them to do. Every step you add will lose a significant fraction of your original visitors.

Thanks, Selby. That explanation was enough to get me to consider setting one up. Can one hypergate have a menu that lets an av choose between several destinations?

There's this one: http://www.kitely.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=1582

It's not menu-based but a presentation viewer that allows you to page through until you find a destination that suits. Clearly it is not going to work so well for 20+ locations.

You can still drop on by http://www.kitely.com/virtual-world/Min ... ky-Heights and pick of several versions of gates with various abilities. look in contents and such for instructions

thehypergates boxed one has tons of regularly updated destinations...once u set it up you will see the mysterious thehypergates avie come confirm it occasionally.

fyi, the more who use that here the better...it really is an excellent tool

I took the boxed one that Miney recommended and it seems to be fine for destinations in other grids, but does not seem to work for Kitely places. Any clue why?

Mine doesn't either -- although it does work with in-region teleports. The simple explanation is that the within-grid one is the one I haven't coded yet.

UPDATE: OK, I may have fixed mine :) Anyone know whether the HG address uses gridname or gridnick? In Kitely they're the same so not a problem.
