Building Your Role Play World

I'm an old resident of Second Life. I started there in 2005. I guess I am a little spoiled because everything and everyone I needed to get my role play up and running was at my fingertips. My RP expanded to three islands by 2008 and started to get too expensive in Second Life to maintain.

I would like to get it started here but I don't know where to get anything to get started. I need castles, textures, rocks, trees, fences, and most importantly, a RP HUD system.

Please post all information and images in this thread so all RPers can have a good resource. Thanks!

Hi Bladyblue!

There are probably other castles, but one OAR I do know of is the linda kelly autumn castle. You can download it here: http://lindakellie.com/New/?page_id=914

I just ran across this opensim RPG/Scavengar system script set on the osgrid forums: http://forums.osgrid.org/viewtopic.php? ... c99c2a6a0e

There are a variety of textures in the linda kellie freebie worlds here in Kitely, such as this one: http://www.kitely.com/virtual-world/Kat ... ie-Mall-20

The hypergridbusiness "Where to get content" article was also just updated a few days ago: http://www.hypergridbusiness.com/2011/0 ... r-opensim/

Thanks. That gives me a few good resources to start my research.

Eventually I will get it to look something like it did in SL.

Johnny Night's Amethyst Isle includes a few medieval props for sale. I'm looking forward to when everything is enabled (it's an import in progress).

Hi Bladyblue :)

I am actually working on a medieval themed RP region too and ran into some of the same problems as you. I am taking a slightly different approach to those recommended above, though those are also excellent resources. I am good with the basic building tools and can make my own structures, so thats no problem. For sculptmaps and textures, I have approached creators in secondlife and explained what I am doing, and they are often happy to send you an email with a zip file of the sculptmaps and textures for a few extra bucks. Many even offer "extended licences" for other virtual worlds. Texuturesrus.net is a good place to start. I have found many treasures there, and Morphe Inc let me use his sculptmaps at no extra charge. I advise you ask any texture/skin/sculptmap maker. Anyone who will have their stuff on a hard drive is worth asking. Worst they can say is no. Some will treat you like the anti-christ  , but thats cool. Just say thanks and move on.

Its such a shame LL dont let people back their creations up, as many builders I have spoken to would also offer this if they could, but even this is changing with the introduction of mesh. In-fact, if you have any self-made builds, a great way to export the basics is with the mesh workshop scripts available on SLmarketplace. It exports basic prim shapes you make in world as optimised mesh ready for re-upload into....well, wherever you like 8-) Sadly it cant handle sculptmaps or severely tortured prims (yet).

Trees are a problem. Well, good looking ones anywho. I have not found any that come anywhere close to SL standard. Though I found some nice mesh bushes on CGshare.org that seemed to work well.

For mesh components, I have also been scrounging around googles 3D warehouse via sketchup and I must say I have found some gold in amongst all the awful stuff  . Uploading it is fairly simple, and you dont have to worry about prim cost so much here :) so you can afford to upload now, check it out, find what you like and optimise later, if at all. Just make sure whatever you import is open source licenced! (most all of it is). If you plan to sell builds, you need to make sure it is also commercialy licenced. I can walk you through the process if you need, its pretty straight forward.

As for HUDS and RP stuff, I know someone was working on a system on OSgrid, but I dont know much about that. Maybe check out the forums there. I also know Ener Hax has some very interesting NPC scripts posted on her blog that I will be having a play with. thats over at iliveisl.com *EDIT* the NPC script is from Ohn Lang for anyone reading this after the fact. Sorry Ohn!

Well......thats pretty much all I know :D hope it helps.

Trees are a problem.
Gosh yes. I'd give my avatar's right pinky toe for some SL quality plants and trees.

I've seen some nice trees and other mesh things in turbosquid as well. As long as you don' t plan on giving away or selling any items you download from there, not a bad resource. But you have to look for lower polygon/vertice counts, and limit search to DAE or something you have software that can open and export from. There are very few free items, but plenty of nice stuff.

Key Gruin on my gPlus feed uses Snappy Trees on Blender to create trees for his OSgrid.

the one on the far right is not a Snappy, but made with Blender's Sapling addon. The one in the background without foliage was made last summer, and two nearest me are brand new. On my mesh playground region Keyway." https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities ... 4315007534
