New content for the Opensim Library

Post by Tess Juel »

I'm working on an upgrade of the Library content, starting with the textures, and need some input: What do we need?

I do not want suggestions for specific textures at this point but rather what kind: wood? terrain? fabric? bricks? plants? etc., etc.

There is a limit to how many textures we can have. It hasn't been determined yet but think lower hundreds, certainly not a thousand. That means the textures have to be as versatile as possible and we do not ones that are hardly ever used.

Any suggestions?

----

Edit: Adding a list of what we have so far. Will edit it as and when people offer more suggestions and comments.
  • Terrain
    • Two grass textures
    • Two rock textures
    • Two sand textures (wet and dry)
    • Gravel
    • Mud
  • Masonry, stoneworks etc
    • Bricks
    • Concrete
    • Dressed stone wall
    • Natural stone wall
    • Pavers
  • Fabric
  • Plants
  • Tiles
  • Water
    • Water surface
    • Water particles
    • Bubble
  • Avatar and Clothing
    • Body template
    • Eye template
    • Clothing templates
    • Hair textures
  • Stone
    • Marble
  • Wood

Thanks for this. I'd add stone, e.g. ashlar, and paving to your list.

Oh yes, I forgot pavers. I suppose a simple four square stone tiles one is the most relevant.
Stone textures would be part of the terrain set, right?

This is getting tricky already. We could easily fill up the library with hundreds of stone and paver textures but we have to prioritize.

water and water particles
avatar body and clothing templates
hair textures

I always liked the LL selection and organization. OS needs something as good, or better.

Stone in this context is a building material, e.g. sandstone. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashlar

Probably a minority interest so not to worry.

Oh, that's mandatory and not a minority interest at all! But it's already on the list as "Dressed stone wall".

Come to think of it, we probably need one non-terrain plain stone texture though: Marble

I'm aiming for better of course. ;)

But we also have to limit the size of the Library. SL's have 3 500 items all in all and I think that is too much.

The generic starter collection is sufficient but as a bonus would be awesome
to have normal maps for them and the roughness map...
