Animations that do not carry full copy permissions

Post by Christine Nyn »

There used to be a list included as part of the docs with either nPose or AVsitter which gave the names of a lot of poses and animations which it was said had been illegally copied and distributed. While I know I had a copy of this list previously a close search of my files is failing to turn it up now.

Does anyone know where this list might be obtained?

Similarly, there are a large number of dance animations freely available from sources in OpenSim, usually within dance balls. Does anyone have access to any lists that show definitively that there are some animations that are truely copyright free? I'm not referring to material that is clearly from Linda Kellie or Avia Bonne here as that is already covered.

There is an amazing collection of .bvh animation files, the Carnegie-Mellon Graphics Lab Motion Capture Database, freely available.
http://mocap.cs.cmu.edu

Outworldz has them all in .zip format for easy downloading.
https://www.outworldz.com/Secondlife/Posts/CMU/

I have 150 page file listing the names and descriptions of each, if a list is what you are more interested in.
I don't recall if I made the list or got it from the site... but if you want the list and can't find it I will be happy to send to you in whatever format works best for you. Or of course you can just scrape it from Outworldz.

That is IF any of the foregoing is what you're interested in! :-)

What I think would be cool, if it hasn't been done already, is to have a Community effort to get ALL of these converted and imported to Kitely as a collection for people to use freely. The license statement from CMU basically states "You may include this data in commercially-sold products,
but you may not resell this data directly, even in converted form." So obviously couldn't sell them directly on Kitely Market, but one could put them inworld somewhere and then sell the LM to that location on Kitely Market for $10KC.

If anyone is interested in working on such a project give a holler and we'll see if we can coordinate something, I'd be very happy to participate in such an effort.

Thank you Shandon. Your proposal for a Kitely "animation bank" is a very attractive thought.

My query is more tilted towards helping people avoid potential DMCA quibbles though.

This arose on a couple of other grids recently where widely used items freely available in OpenSim were rejected as being potentially in breach of copyright. The Carnegie Mellon list, and its use restrictions, would be a good starting point for what you might term as a "white list", in itself a very useful item, but what I was hoping for was a "black list" which people should avoid unless they had incontrovertible proof of rights to use items on it.

So my original query stands - can anyone help with that?

My lists turned out to be squirrelled away deep in an inventory on Second Life.

They are rather old by now, even though many of the anims mentioned are still in circulation. If anyone wants the actual lists, which are in notecard form, I could probably find a way to get them to you but the Kitely forum doesn't look like the place to do that.

Some urls are included in the the notecards and I'm giving those here so you get a flavour of what I had in mind. Some kind of more up to date list is probably available somewhere but I haven't so far found anything.
