I have been running both npcs and animesh and the only difference I have noted so far is that animesh loads faster, however if you want a lot of movement like following a path, there are scripts you can edit for NPCs but you have to create an animation in order to get them to follow a path. So even with several animations that can be found in open sim, the movement can be choppy and not as easily controlled as being able to use the script tools to define actual paths around the whole sim. I am just enjoying watch opensim grow and all of the great creators that are so dedicated to it. I am a mere tinkerbell amongst magic creation dragons!
