Books in Kitely/OpenSim?

Post by Mykyl Nordwind »

In SL I used ThinC books to create books inworld, but I have been unable to find something similar - and my needs now include being able to create the books on my local machine. I have found these scripts: http://forums.osgrid.org/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=3914 - but I must be really dense as I have not been able to create the prims for the 3-prim book described. It is very difficult for me to explore much in any online world right now, so I am wondering if anyone can direct me to a place in-world (Kitely or Open-Sim) where I can find full perm working copies of these books or something similar, or if there is a place on the web you might know of where I could download an xml of this object.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I'm sorry Mykyl but I'm unfamiliar with these scripts but there are several writers who use Kitely so maybe one of them can help you.

I'm sure some real scripters (like Ohn) could do better with this... I didn't do so well with the 3 prim book, but liked the 1 prim book http://forums.osgrid.org/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=3914 at the same link for a HUD book. It wasn't working with the texture in the prim and named in the notecard, so I tried just copying the UUIDs of the textures I wanted to use into the notecard and it worked! I'll leave a copy of the book I did near the landing point at Marcat http://www.kitely.com/virtual-world/Mar ... ely/Marcat if anyone wants to copy it and make it their own. You can either copy the texture UUIDs you want to add over mine, or open and copy the script and notecard, then add them to your own prim. After you add the textures you want, pull it back into inventory and choose Attach To Hud - Center. :D

Thanks, Marstol. I've taken a copy and it works fine for me. No excuse now for me not to set up in-world journals!

Thank you, Marstol. My wish list for a virtual book would include this feature, but would look like a real book with pages that could turn, and a page in the front or back would have a web link that could take you to a page like those on Project Gutenberg ( http://www.gutenberg.org/ ) where you could get a version for almost any device, something like a combination of the ThinC books and the books that JJ Drinkwater has created in Caledon and Winterfell in SL.
Are there any TAW ("The Actual World" - most refer to it as "RL") libraries which have a presence in Kitely? I would love to see how they present materials here.

Your welcome Dot. You already have some pretty cool books in the worlds you curate from what I've seen. :D I bet you could figure out the 3 prim book too since you can actually code, not just stumble around other people's code until you get it to do what you want! I might take another shot at it sometime.

That's a good wish list item Mykyl. I don't know where to find anything like that, but if you find it, please let me know! Valerie Hill has a Community Library. "An exploration in information delivery for libraries, librarians, and those interested in sharing information in new formats." I haven't visited yet, but thing I might later today. Here's the link: http://www.kitely.com/virtual-world/Val ... al-Library
