I was using Firestorm on Win8.1, most likely on the private 2x2 called nbt. My problem might have been a local interwebz issue, i.e. coincidence. I can't see an obvious reason why Metro and Kitely should have a similar outage. I guess I should have tried uploading something else to see if it was mesh-specific -- didn't think at the time.
