It's therefore best to follow Ada's advise regarding default textures
The default texture option has nothing whatsoever to do with this since it only applies to prims you rez. Meshes are still uploaded with undefined texture(s). This is of course a bug and since it only applies to opensim, not SL, it has to be in the server code so not much we can do about it. However, I've notified Beq anyway. Maybe she can find a client side workaround.

Ya. I've been testing that recently, and concluded that it's far better not to include textures on dae import. The viewer changes the texture names along with weirdness I couldn't nail down. Far better to do a decent job of baking or otherwise improving the PBR in other software and bring the textures in separately from the mesh. Tedious, yes.
