Selling PBR assets
Are there plans to support selling PBR assets (both PBR materials and objects with PBR materials applied) on the Kitely Market? If so what's the timeline?

Re: Selling PBR assets
Hi Candide,
We plan to support PBR materials in Kitely Market when we upgrade to OpenSim 0.9.3 which properly supports them.

Re: Selling PBR assets
i had to ask my partner irl to put the 'older' version back, i asked him to put the pbr version for open sim on for kitely when i heard it 'existed',
like ilan says, it will arrive.
atm it's really not working enough yet, i had taken pics of my witch hats with that version, so the pbr pattern effects are visible, ive put the info clearly for customers that the patterns won't b visible, only visible with pbr version viewer.
it has advantages (beauty for many things), atm in sl even it's still 'heavy' on the pc (mine is new & fancy - costed lots), so i see many pple complain (in groups) that it's too heavy for their laptop etc, and they put the previous version back as well.
many think-say that LL still 'should-will' make the pbr version (FS) better 'thumbs up'.

Re: Selling PBR assets
Hi Gusher,
OpenSim 0.9.3 hasn't been released yet. When it is it's likely it will take several more months until the various issues it introduces will be fixed. We won't change our system to using it before that happens.

Re: Selling PBR assets
From my initial experiments and reading on the forums, a lot of items will not necessarily need "full" PBR anyway.
As it stands, the PBR implementation in SL only really gives us one new map - Metallicity. I.e- metallic reflectivity.
"True" PBR has a few more map types but for performance reasons, they are not currently going to be implemented.
So its really only important to use PBR if your object contains a surface which is metallic. There are other fringe use cases, but lets keep things simple.
Most other objects will only require the 3 maps we already use (colour, normal, specular). So for a lot of things, you can prepare now (as I have been doing) and then simply combine those maps into a PBR material at a later date when we get the update.
Technically a Roughness map is different from a Specular map. But they are basically the same thing and you can turn one into the other and vice versa with a quick bit of manipulation in Photoshop, GIMP or whatever you use. Then you will just need to pack the maps into a GTLF material and upload it again.
In 90% of cases, using the old method will be fine as you don't want bricks, grass, wood etc to be metallic, so the metallic map in a PBR material will be black/void/empty anyway. The most important thing will be for all objects to have at least normal and specular maps going forward.

Re: Selling PBR assets
Right now as-is you can get that pbr effect by raising the Environment reflection...
However, true PBR will allow us to create mirrors and have better metal shiny props..

Re: Selling PBR assets
Not only metallic, it makes also a HUGE difference in fabrics,
hereby an exemple,
now that i have 'older' viewer FS back, since PBR did not work well yet, the pattern is indeed not visible anymore,
just FYI for people who need to know or would like to know

Re: Selling PBR assets
I have no plans to sell PBR items on the Kitely Market for the foreseeable future since Kitely currently has no plans to support it. I create these and sell them at my store on a grid that is PBR enabled and I am in the process of converting all my items in that store to PBR. Those are currently my hottest items. The 0.9.3 OS version on that grid is very stable and so is the latest Firestorm viewer used in conjunction with it - 7.1.11. That viewer is much faster and more stable than the old non-pbr FS viewer 6.6.17.

Re: Selling PBR assets
Here are some examples of PBR in my work. The most important thing I realized was that PBR enhanced and rendered all the textures, lighting, and objects in the room much better than before. And because people sometimes come from grids without PBR, I always make sure that every surface with a pbr material also has the older blinn phong textures, so that no surface is blank.
