Getting the word out...

Post by Constance Peregrine »

I don't really do much promoting anymore, at least not near as much as I used to, and less and less as time goes on.

However, it might be a good idea to have suggestions in one nice thread about how one may go about it, if they are so inclined.

Not just for commercial purposes, of course, though that can also be part of it, or separate, but just to spread the word about Kitely and/or various things you or others, are doing.

So let me please do my own little part with some suggestions, and if others wish to add ideas, more the good-))

Google, for better or for worse, allows people to connect in all sorts of ways. Since they are also the top search engine, currently http://www.ebizmba.com/articles/search-engines I believe it is a good idea to at least use https://support.google.com/blogger/answer/1623800?hl=en if not as your main blogsite, at least in support of others, or for specific uses.

Do blog pages as much as possible, as each one gets indexed and can lead people to other parts.

When you use google services you can also join google communities. One such as a starter specific to Kitely, is this:

https://plus.google.com/u/0/b/113904954 ... 4656181042

And from there you can discover others of interest to you.

One thing with all that google stuff is the plussing and sharing aspect...used well, you can get the word out to tons of people about things that interest you. It can get overwhelming quickly though, so word of caution.

You can use youtube, now owned by google, and it integrates well into other google services, in all sorts of ways.

You can easily and rather inexpensively, rent a domain. And there are often free templates that come with the hosting services that can simplify the creation of your own website. This also gives you other useful plusses, one of which is tons of email addresses you can then setup, with your own domain, which is kinda fun, and cool.

There are tons of hosting companies, and everyone has their favorite, but I often use:

http://www.hypermart.net/ as it has been around for many years, I have used it quite a bit, and use it now for one I do for my own sister. But, of course, ymmv on that.

With any hosting company, make sure and watch closely when you sign up as they will try to get you to add services, most of which you do not need, but that will increase the costs substantially....read carefully....if you do not understand what they are wanting you to add, don't add it, you can always do so later. You really only need the domain name, and the hosting service to store it.

Once you do any of those, and if you are so inclined, and can deal with a little of the tech side, you can publish to search engines by going to their main sites and following links to how they want it done, or search such things.

You can fix up http://www.robotstxt.org/ and get your site indexed better, learn about meta tags, and such behind the scenes background website creation HTML, if you wish to.

I wish I could offer my services and help in coding websites, but I have gotten a bit behind and am not very familiar with HTML5 and just do not have the spare energies, but there are those who can be hired to help, and it can be worth it to consider. Costs vary widely, and more is not necessarily better.

You can use http://www.opensimcity.org which is run by a very nice woman, Marisa, on her own dime, as a service she gives to Opensim, it has tons of interesting features and she is always willing to discuss how to improve it.

Keep in mind when posting pictures publicly, they are often indexed too, so you might always try to add some descriptive text inside the photo itself.

For example, check out mine, where you will see all sorts of silly photos that somehow relate to me, some of which are Kitely also:

https://www.google.com/search?q=%22mine ... 39&dpr=1.5

Of course many like twitter and facebook, I don't, and don't use them, so others can speak to that more if they wish to.

be well...

eta: you can search availability, and find a domain name or names, using this TLD provider, also:
