Here's a roundup of links to the coverage of Friday's comments by Ebbe Altberg about LL's development of a new virtual world platform...

Im sure it will be expensive and in need of a high end computer

Nevertheless, Im curious but is a long term thing, lets grow up on Kitely, trustable and affordable

It's funny watching some of the people over there in a complete panic, it's not the end of SL it's the end of LL only having one world.

I think it's good news for SL, but I'm more excited about Kitely contributing to the High Fidelity, and the kiteky Market going to deliver to High Fidelity, I'd like to think the future lies out side closed grids.

I think competition is ultimately a good thing for consumers. I do understand people being a bit confused as to what to do in the face of this news. We all know many virtual projects are planned in terms of years.

For nearly 11 years, people knew their options. First, it was only SL, then along came Opensim and a few other which eventually flopped. You knew where you stood. Now its not as clear cut.

As I understand it, the third party viewers such as Firestorm are based on the LL open source viewer code, and SL may be discontinued at some point, to be replaced in their product line by a new, better virtual world product.

What does this bode for Kitely in terms of technical development? I am not asking about how the possible changes in the competitive landscape may affect Kitely. What I want to know is how LL's slowing and eventually stopping viewer development will affect Kitely since, presumably, new capabilities that LL has been responsible for like mesh, fitted mesh, outfits, etc. will no longer be forthcoming in Firestorm. Or will they?

Hi Jennifer,

Firestorm being open source means that OpenSim developers can continue developing it once Linden Lab no longer does. People can also write independent viewers that do not rely on the Second Life viewer codebase at all.
