I have an HP Envy Desktop with:
GeForce GT 640 with 20456 total available memory
intel Core i7-4470 CPU 3.4 GHz
32GB Ram

it is an older model but still going strong!

I use shadows for photos and video but they tend to make my laptop run hot. Not tested scientifically but starting FS from its folder using the command prompt seems to help -- just enter

I try and have as much as I can on when I can

I used to use a viewer called Black Dragon, freaking cant recommend it enough if you're on SL (get higher fps with this viewer and higher settings than I do with a lot of other viewers!) and here's some pic links because I feel bad flooding a thread with overly excited spruking of things!

but sadly it isn't OpenSim compatible!

I'm a big Alchemy fan as well couldn't recommend it enough

I don't use shadows in the graphics settings, my machine lags down too easily with them on. On my builds I use alpha shadow prims. People that buy my stuff and don't want to see the prim shadows can mod those faces to make them 100% transparent.
