Oh god i hope i haven't pulled the rug from under you! I just kind of really liked the idea and thought id give it a go! I still have a long way to go with it all and if you're still thinking of doing any stuff on it ill be the first one there!

I had thought of pulling in some of Sketchfab user fabsle's medieval soldiers for History Month but never quite got round to it https://sketchfab.com/fabsle
Something similar might be good for battle scenes? It struck me that maybe you could also animate them (s)lightly by having 2-3 related groups and swapping between by changing their alpha via a script.
I'm wanting crowd scenes to accompany Age of Steam (opening of the Liverpool & Manchester Railway in 1830) but am also looking at the potential of particles or silhouettes.

Low poly also going to be important for A-Frame (now with added AR) http://nwn.blogs.com/nwn/2016/08/a-frame-vr.html#more. Port to A-Frame from OpenSim? OpenSim as a backend to A-Frame?
