Grids having problems with OpenSim versions

Post by Dot Matrix »

Just a heads-up...

From Hypergrid Business, 27 Jan 2020: https://www.hypergridbusiness.com/2020/ ... t-of-2020/:

"[Tranquillity] grid has been trying to upgrade to the latest OpenSim version but has been having trouble.

“Last weekend we tried upgrading from OpenSim 8 to OpenSim 9,” said Steve Stewart, also known in-world as Chris Tranquility. “However, no matter what we tried there were going to be too many lost assets to be acceptable.” ... “The new grid obviously has all the OpenSim 9 features and residents will have the choice of physics and scripts on their own regions,” said Stewart. “The grid overall is set to BulletSim physics and Xengine scripts. However, Ubode and Yengine can be on individuals regions.” "

Two other grids seem to be having problems with deciding which OpenSim version (or even platform) to go for.

Thank you Dot, that is part of why Kitely isn't just going to switch to using OpenSim 0.9.1 as is. We've already integrated more than 600 of our proprietary OpenSim patches into the latest OpenSim version and are now doing extensive testing and fixing of issues we've encountered during that process. When we roll this updated OpenSim version onto our system it will have a lot less issues than those that other grids are reporting.

As an FYI for those who haven't heard this in our Kitely Community Meetings already, we've decided to use Xengine and won't be using Yengine at its current development state. Similarly we'll continue to offer both ODE and BulletSim as per-world physics engine options, in addition to ubODE (assuming we conclude it is stable enough to include).

From what Chris Namaste is saying, it seems another grid has been struggling with the move from 0.8.2.1 to 0.9. Poor Danny -- it must be so hard when you try your best and the underlying platform is just not stable enough in spite of the claims made for it.

Thanks for taking so much care with this, Ilan, and for all the expertise and testing that is going on behind the scenes with you and Oren.
