I'd love to extend my build and merge with people I trust in a BIG area :) Indeed, that would be awesome :)

Having done something along these lines on OSgrid, with different regions in different OpenSim instances, some on home-based servers and others on rented hardware servers, I suspect performance might not be optimal -- especially if some instances have megaregions turned on.

Mind you, it was a surprise to look across what should have been an empty grid-square of sea and see the region beyond.

A little late to the discussion, but then my life goes like that these days.

I feel that Kitely has offered a valuable and low-cost service for folks like me who love to build and tell story and who don't have a lot of money to spend in SL. I've also rented grid space from different people/companies, and Kitely is by far the best value. As an educator, I really appreciate the affordability of the grid, because I sometimes spend a lot of time here and sometimes not much time at all. I plan to get set up on the Gold plan for myself - for my alts (story characters), I hope there is still a lower-cost, lower-minute plan.

I like the idea of attaching one of my sims to a village of other like-minded people such as storytellers, where the story might continue from one sim to another. Some elements would be common, as in Winterfell or Caledon or other multi-sim areas in SL. Some elements would be individual to each sim. I like controlling my own sim, but I also like being "in touch" with friends and neighbors.

Isn't there a technical issue with adjacent sims having to display the neighboring sims as they change? I thought that was a real CPU hog, not to mention transferring avatar state on sim crossing.

indeed :(

Perhaps a multi-owned super-mega-awesome-region :D Nah, that'd be crazy.. wouldn't it..

I've been kinda thinking that we may be able to convince Kitely to let us do something like this as a long-term ongoing special project.

I'm thinking that the group-ownership aspect will be a more difficult technical hurdle than the larger sized world aspect of this request. But once Kitely solves the group ownership problem, which is apparently on their roadmap, it might become possible to do this. It would be an interesting experiment, that's for sure.

One of the notions the late lamented Blue Mars talked about was having some kind of static or very slowly updated "on the horizon" type imagery of other worlds that just showed major builds. You couldn't go there directly or see what was happening in real time, but it was to give an impression of a larger, connected world. Getting to other "islands" would require teleporting, but I could imagine some UI sugar, like pointing to an adjacent island, right clicking and selecting teleport.

Perhaps it could be slightly more sophisticated with each island being able to create an animated image that would represent it in the distance. It would be cool if it could have something like lights at night, smoke from a prominent volcano, etc. It would have to be limited as it would count against the viewing islands's server load, but, OTOH, it could just be a 2D image, slowly animated for the smoke and time of day effects. I'd imagine it would be part of the sky system in the viewing island.
