I have been editing the description for one of my worlds and wanted to indent a couple of paragraphs but this doesn't seem to work?

That is by design, world descriptions have various automatic formating adjustments made to them to make sure the page remains visually appealing. Before this was done some people (often unintentionally) added text that made the world pages look bad or even broken (a common mistake was adding whitespaces before or after the text, which caused the page to look malformed and longer than it should).
