I am making documents for my new students about the first steps they need to take to come into my world. But the https://www.kitely.com hyperlink gives the following error message when it is clicked on.

Unable to open https://www.kitely.com/. Cannot download the information you requested.

I've tried changing the hyperlink to http://www.kitely.com and www.kitely.com, but the result is the same. The format of the hyperlink looks right (underlined and blue), but it doesn't work.

The link is correct. Please make sure that you didn't use Unicode for typing in the URL, doing so may confuse the browser into trying to convert the name into a different collection of characters that look the same but aren't actually using the English character set. Please go to the Kitely website in your browser, copy the URL from the browser address bar then paste that into your document.

I already tried both typing in the link myself and copying and pasting the link from the website and got the same result both ways.

What document are you trying to create (PDF? Word file?) and what software (and version) are you using to create it with?

Yes, I had already worked through those pages before posting in the Kitely forum.

By the way, in the same document that I've been trying to put a Kitely website link, I created hyperlinks to the Firestorm Viewer website and the Second Life website without any problems. I've created hyperlinks inside documents millions of times without any problems. I've only ever had a problem with creating a Kitely hyperlink.

Can you please email me the document you're working on (just the page with the link will suffice).

After checking your file I found the problem. It is the result of Word trying to access our website before sending it to the browser. This is a problem because our site checks for login status (to determine which parts of the site to display) and Word isn't capable of running that code. If you try to open the document I sent you back (an unedited version of your document) using the Google doc viewer, you'll see the link works as intended. A more robust solution will be to distribute your document as a PDF file. Adobe Reader properly directs the URL to the browser without trying to access it first so this will enable your students to use all the links it contains without issue.
