NPCs and non commercially licensed content

Post by Selby Evans »

Fred Beckhusen (Ferd Frederix) made this comment in a conversation.
It would be nice if it was on a grid where NPCs could be made to work without paying for your own land, first. And non commercial. Metro or osgrid are both non commercial, unlike Kitely, so Cc-NC (non commercially licensed content) is allowed on those grids.

The location refers to Cookie II. It would indeed be helpful if the region settings could allow NPCs to work for designated visitors in Cookie II. My impression is that the restrictions are overprotective anyway.

I don't understand what he is talking about here:
unlike Kitely, so Cc-NC (non commercially licensed content) is allowed on those grids.
Is some kind of content not allowed on Kitely?

Hi Selby,

There is no problem using CC-NC content if the purpose for which it is used is non commercial. This means that Kitely, the company, may not be able to use it in its own worlds but there is nothing stopping you, a Kitely customer, from doing so on a world that you host in Kitely, as long as that content is not owned by a commercial entity or used for commercial purposes.

In other words, if you are a business you may not use CC-NC content as part of your service but if your world is not owned by a business and not used for commercial purposes then you should be fine using CC-NC content. Regardless, your world is hosted by Kitely it is not part of the Kitely offering. If Fred's logic held true then you wouldn't be able to use CC-NC content on any website that is hosted on servers which you host with a professional web hosting company.

As for the other matter, NPC creation is restricted to the world manager only as those functions can easily be abused to grief worlds.

Thank you for the clarification, Ilan. I rather thought that was the case. Actually, we are not generally doing anything with the content--most content remains in the possession of the creator as it is displayed. We do take videos sometimes, and the videos may be used for advertising when they are posted on YouTube, so I will advise the participants that allowing us to video may violate NC licenses if they are using such content.
