Mirage of Phantom Terrain

Post by Sky Solara »

Is anyone having a problem with phantom terrain or spikey terraforming. O.o We fall through our land when we land and sometimes walk. The spikes seem to come and go ... might be the land tools. Can't be me... haha! Thank you!!!

Hi Sky,

Is this happening while you're still terraforming or after you've finished?

This happens sometimes in Intersections, a 4x4. For example avies occasionally disappear underground in the top right region (Vespers), which has not had its terraforming tweaked for weeks.

Mind you, it's something I've experienced often in OpenSim and usually put it down to its funny physics.

I had it happen with one of John Brouchoud's Elements OAR files. Ultimately I put down a transparent prim to cover the spot and had no problems thereafter. I vaguely recall Lawrence Pierce making a long and detailed report here on the same topic.

Edit: Bulletsim physics appeared to help...

BulletSim may suffer less from this problem but is still has severe performance problems in other areas. We highly advise against using it for anything but temporarily checking out how it works.

As for " spikey terraforming" this offtimes happens when terraforming a straight line drop, say for a cliff.

Sometimes it can be ameliorated by doing a bit of smoothing and in the case of the drop off being underwater, look there and smooth it.

You can temporarily remove system water in two ways.
