Uploaded mesh has a huge bounding box

Post by Constance Fairchild »

The subject says it all. I'm trying to upload a mesh, but the bounding box of the resulting object is much larger than the object. Any suggestions?

not sure if this is applicable directly to this question, but this was just posted:

Hi Constance,

You can find information on how to set up a collision mesh, instead of a bounding box, here: http://opensim-creations.com/2012/02/24 ... o-opensim/

I've had this problem too and using a collision mesh does not seem to be the solution --- at least with very large mesh objects (buildings, for instance). The new boundary is smaller than a big box around the object, but still extends a meter or more away from the mesh's surface. I considered making the mesh object a phantom and inserting prims where I want the boundary to be --- but that partially defeats the purpose of using a mesh at all.

Hi Justin,

Have you tried uploading your own collision mesh or is this with the collision mesh that is automatically created when uploading a mesh?

I go to the Physics tab and one of the options is to upload a file. I choose the same file as the mesh I uploaded. Is there another way to do it?

Hi Justin,

A few days ago we fixed a bug that effected collision meshes. I suggest you try just uploading a mesh without uploading any collision mesh for it. When you do this OpenSim should use the mesh itself as its collision mesh.

If this resolves your problem then you can try creating a lower poly-count collision mesh and seeing how it effects this behavior.

Thanks for the suggestion! It didn't help, but I suspect that the problem involves bugs in Kokua's ability to upload models. Some perfectly-good models become a random jumble of textures and shapes after I upload them. In this case, the model looks good but has strange invisible boundaries --- some perpendicular to its visible surface (and extending several meters!). I'll just make the model a phantom and try to duplicate it with prims. It's a building and the advantage of duplicating it with prims is that it will have usable rooms, rather than just being a big shape.

Is there a way to see the boundary of a model? Setting "Highlight invisible" on has no effect in this case. The only way I can determine the model's boundary is by flying around it as close as possible.

Hi Justin,

Please try uploading the mesh with the latest OpenSim-compatible version of Firestorm. It may resolve the problems you're encountering.
