Crazy terrain physics and physics issues in general

Post by Ozwell Wayfarer »

Recently, it seems terrain has become more unstable *no pun intended*.

Previously I only experienced the odd huccup here and there. Recently it seems to be getting worse. Often when I am in build mode may avatar starts bouncing off in some random direction. I was just over visiting Moco Scribes sim and both of us were bouncing about like crazy, or half sinking into the terrain with our legs popping out at right angles to our bodies. It all sounds a bit kinky, I know, but I assure you, twas just very annoying.

Also, recently I experienced a problem which I messaged Ilan about but will relay here in-case anyone experiences this while using my products. Basically, I am working in a 3x3 megaregion. When I build a house or rez from inventory in the central sim, everything works fine. However if I then take the same house and rez it in the south sim, my avatar only has to touch it and I go into the "zombie walk lockup of death", where I just walk in the air until I log out and log back in again. It also seems to cause the sim to crash, as the last few actions I make are forgotten upon loging back in.

I see both these as pretty serious bugs. I will help test them in any way I can, but it would be good if some action were taken on this fairly quickly. I know from talking to Moco (and I hope she does not mind me saying) it is already putting her off a little. Which I can understand. Walking around is one of the most basic of basics.

What physics engine are you using Ozwell? Have you tried switching to the other option?

This is using ODE. For the longest time it worked fine! But I started noticing the bouncing around issue about a month ago.

Over at Mocos place I believe she was also using ODE. I have never seen it quite as bad as it was there. We were falling into the terrain and bouncing around all over the place. I asked her if she had recently terraformed the area, as I have seen this behavior sometimes when trying to walk on somewhere you just landscaped. Its like the physics model hasnt quite caught up with the mesh yet. But Moco confirmed that she has not altered the terrain at all in that session. So I was very puzzled.

and to be honest, I dont want to switch to bullet, its still experimental and most people run ODE at present. I need to make sure my products work for those people.

Please switch to Bullet, see if the issue persists, then switch back to ODE and report your findings.

So I switched to Bullet then switched back as Ilan suggested and that seems to have cleared the problem. I cant speak for Mocos issues, but I will keep the thread informed. thank you Ilan!

OpenSim has problems with "bouncing" that can result under certain conditions when the avatar's bounding box is somehow problematic with the terrain the avatar is standing on. There have been several attempts to fix this over the years (some of them by us) but the issue has never been eliminated completely. Changing the physics engine may help in such cases.
