Hi Joe,

Kitely hasn't enabled Hypergrid access yet because the current version of Hypergrid (version 1.5) doesn't protect content permissions. You can take any object you own with you when you Hypergrid teleport, and the owner of the target grid can easily use his god privileges in that OpenSim instance to copy all those objects. Serious content creators usually fear having their content stolen which is why big grids close down hypergrid access - having Hypergrid access enabled limits the number of merchants willing to do business on their grids.

Kitely is very serious about protecting content which is why we aren't willing to enable Hypergrid access as long as it doesn't protect content permissions. This is also why we added automatic filtering to OAR exports and even contributed that code to OpenSim so that other grids will be able to protect content permissions as well (see: http://www.kitely.com/virtual-world-new ... rmissions/).

We are currently developing an advanced marketplace which will include a new Export permission. Merchants will be able to use this new permission to define which objects they wish to limit to the Kitely grid and which objects they are willing to let people export to OAR files and/or take with them when they Hypergrid teleport. We plan to add Hypergrid access after we finish working on the marketplace and have this content protection mechanism in place.

Kitely's priority for creator protection is absolutely fabulous. I hope that merchants looking at this grid grasp how carefully Kitely is guarding creator content, by delaying hypergrid capabilities until those protections are in place.

Ilan, I was wondering how the basics of hypergrid work. Once it is enabled, and you go through a hypergrid gate, how do you get logged into a new grid? Does the viewer handle it automatically? Or do you have to go through a manual logging in process, or some other process?

Hi Ohn,

You type in a grid coordinate, similar to how you would enter one for your home grid and the viewer teleports you to the destination. Alternatively, you can be teleported by a script (usually connected to a hypergate object).

For details see: http://www.hypergridbusiness.com/2012/0 ... rmissions/

Is this Kitely's solution to the missing export permission in HG 2.0 and which is also unsupported by viewers? Notwithstanding the work required to implement the marketplace, I assume that means Kitely will support HG 2.0 rather than wait for 2.5 and hence implementation will be relatively soon. If that's the case then many thanks and much kudos to Kitely for finding a solution to a knotty problem.

Hi Graham,

Items sold via the Kitely marketplace will have an Export permission that merchants can set to allow/disallow these items to leave the Kitely grid. Setting this permission will be done via the marketplace and not inside the viewer thus bypassing the lack of viewer support. The code for enforcing this Export permission will be part of Kitely's proprietary infrastructure which enables us to prevent content that shouldn't leave the Kitely grid from doing so even though the hypergrid protocol doesn't have this capability. By opting for this solution we will be able to implement Hypergrid connectivity before the Hypergrid protocol includes the content protection mechanisms that we believe are essential for getting professional content creators to be willing to sell their content on Hypergrid-connected grids.

Will this method of implementing hypergrid allow for two-way traffic? That is, people teleporting from other grids into Kitely worlds and from Kitely worlds into other grids?

Hi Dot,

Yes, we will use the standard Hypergrid protocol but add filtering on our end to prevent content that shouldn't leave the Kitely grid from doing so.
