We had something odd happen on a megaworld today and we're trying to figure out why.
We were testing a particle emitter. Three of us were there. One of us (the one with the most powerful computer) could see the particles clearly. I had the second most powerful and could see brief wisps and glimpses of the particles. The third person had an older system and couldn't see them at all.
The thing is, all of us had our max particle settings to 8192.
I visited Kitely Merchant Sandbox, and the very same emitter rezzed particles like crazy.
So I'm wondering if anyone might know why despite our particle settings being identical, the three of saw different results from the same emitter. I know particle emissions are viewer-side, but why were they fully visible for one person and not for others?
Thanks!

Hi Snoots,
It may have to do with the differences between your respective GPUs or the view angles, distances and enables graphics settings. If this happens again try to stand at the same position and angle as the friend who sees all the particles then check that you're both running the same graphics settings.

Re: Question: Particles rezzeing for some, not others
Since particles are rezzed viewer-side and always face the avatar, I would have to believe angle of presentation is irrelevant. Differences in graphics settings: that's part of what I'm asking: what differences would there be? My graphics settings are on High with particles at 8192. Are there other graphics settings that would be involved? Plus, when I went to a different world and emitted exactly the same particles (dwagon fire), they showed up fine, no problem.
So I'm wondering why one person could see them and two others couldn't.

were there other particles running on the region?

The view angle, view distance and graphics settings that define what the viewer needs to render each frame define what other things need to be rendered besides the particles. It's possible that if there are enough of them the viewer doesn't render all of the particles in order to maintain decent viewer FPS. Take for example shadows, lighting, antialiasing and other such image quality settings that create a big dent in the amount of free GPU resources left to render particles.

That makes sense! I'll check out those settings. I might even take a chance and set my graphics to ULTRA just for fun.
