Is it good to use the same files for all grids?

Post by Jennifer Boyle »

I am discussing only the situation in Windows, as I have no knowledge of other OSs. All of the settings that are stored locally are stored in %APPDATA%\Firestorm, which is ordinarily C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\Firestorm. There is no obvious way for a user to change this. The information stored there includes the cache location, which is the same for all accounts, and the location of the chat logs, which can be different for each account. The chat logs won't be a problem unless you use the same avatar name on more than one grid, in which case the chat will all be logged in one chat.txt. IM's will only be intermixed in the same file if you IM avatars with the same name on different grids, but the IM log files will all be in the same folder. There is no supported way to have different settings for different grids. It seems intuitively unwise to use the same cache for more than one grid, undesirable to use the same settings for all grids, and mixing up the chat just creates a mess.

The ideal solution would be command line switches that would allow the user to specify where the files referred to above would be, with one to specify where the folder that is normally the Roaming\Firestrm folder is, one to specify where the chat logs are, and one to specify where the cache is. I wonder if it would be feasible to do that?

I know how to work around the problem using a Windows batch file, and I intend to post one in a week or two, but I wonder what others think about this issue.

Hi Jennifer,

I think the problem you've mentioned is real and should be addressed but we, unfortunately, don't have the resources to do viewer development at this time.

As that is the case, I think that your question (request?) would best be directed at viewer developers as they are the ones who can change how the viewers behave. The Firestorm devs have shown that they are open to feedback concerning how their viewers behave on OpenSim. Filing a JIRA on their site can help bring this issue to their attention.

Thanks. Your promptness is amazing! So are your hours!

Because I run the viewer from a flash drive on different computers, I have a Windows batch file that moves the files to the flash drive when I'm done with a session and moves them to the folders expected by the program when I start a session. It will be simple to modify it to maintain a set for each grid. After I do that, I will post it.
