Re: Numbers of Kitely regions vs SL private regions

Post by Dot Matrix »

Hypergrid Business reports November a solid month for OpenSim growth. Over the past month, Kitely continued to grow in region numbers: an increase of 258 to 13,852.

Tyche Shepherd's SL Grid Survey reports that, from 16 October to 13 November, the number of private estate regions changed from 17,059 to 16,941, a decrease of 146 regions, which is nearly three times the loss of the previous month.

Kitely's land area is now 81.77% of the land area covered by SL's private estate regions.

Over the year from 17 January 2016, SL's private estates have gone from 17,749 to 16,941 regions, a decrease of 808 (4.55% decrease, nearly 1 in 20), while Kitely's land area has increased from 10,507 to 13,852, an increase of 3345 regions (31.84% increase).

Here are a couple of charts showing trendlines. The top chart shows the numbers of regions from when Hypergrid Business first started publishing Kitely's statistics in April 2011. The lower chart uses the same scale and shows how the trendlines changed when Kitely switched to its current offering of Starter, Standard and Advanced Worlds.

The blue lines show the numbers of SL private regions. The green lines are Kitely region equivalents.

The dashed trend lines suggest when Kitely's land area could match the land area of SL's private estates. If taken over the whole period from April 2011, the crossover point happens in January 2018 (top chart). The more recent trend, from April 2015, brings the crossover point forward by six months, to June 2017 (lower chart).

Grids close year with record active numbers, according to Hypergrid Business in their OpenSim statistics report for December 2016. Over the past month, Kitely continued to grow in region numbers: an increase of 251 to 14,103.

Tyche Shepherd's SL Grid Survey reports that, from 13 November to 18 December, the number of private estate regions changed from 16,941 to 16,838, a decrease of 103 regions.

Kitely's land area is now 83.76% of the land area covered by SL's private estate regions.

Over the year from 17 January 2016, SL's private estates have gone from 17,749 to 16,838 regions, a decrease of 911 (5.13% decrease), while Kitely's land area has increased from 10,507 to 14,103, an increase of 3596 regions (34.22% increase).

Kitely's land area on 16 January 2017 was 14,426 standard region equivalents, an increase of 323 since 18 December 2016.

Tyche Shepherd's SL Grid Survey reports that, from 18 December to 15 January, the number of private estate regions changed from 16,838 to 16,777, a decrease of 61 regions.

Kitely's land area is now 86.00% of the land area covered by SL's private estate regions. A year ago it was 59.2% of SL's private estate land area.

Over the full 12 months from 17 January 2016, SL's private estates have gone from 17,749 to 16,777 regions, a decrease of 972 (5.48% decrease), while Kitely's land area has increased from 10,507 to 14,426, an increase of 3919 regions (37.30% increase).

In another way of looking at these numbers, over the past year, for every single private estate region that has gone from SL, the equivalent of a 2x2 varregion has been added to Kitely's land area.

As noted in the HGB monthly statistics thread, Kitely's land area on 17 February 2017 was 14,606 standard region equivalents, an increase of 173 over the January HGB number of 14,433.

Tyche Shepherd's SL Grid Survey reports that, from 18 December to 15 January to 19 February, the number of private estate regions changed from 16,777 to 16,683, a decrease of 94 regions.

Kitely's land area is now 87.55% of the land area covered by SL's private estate regions.

Tyche Shepherd reports the total main grid size as 23,920 regions (7,237 Linden owned + 16,683 private estates). So Kitely's current land area is 61.06% of SL's total main grid area.

For comparison, the biggest OpenSim grid, OSgrid (Kitely is currently second biggest in land area), has 21,541 region equivalents, which is 90.05% of SL's total main grid area.

This means that the total land area of just the two biggest OpenSim grids (36,147) is already half as big again as SL's current main grid area.

HGB reports that OpenSim as a whole (both closed and hypergrid-enabled grids) has 74,727 region equivalents; so OSgrid and Kitely together account for 48.37% of the total OpenSim land area.

OSG has not done a region cleaning in some time now. When they do this again it will likely result in quite a few regions reservations dropping out of the totals.

As noted in the HGB monthly statistics thread, Kitely's land area on 17 March 2017 was 14,887 standard region equivalents, an increase of 281 over the February HGB number of 14,606. (In fact, on Sunday 19 March 2017 just before the weekly Kitely Community meeting, that number passed 15,000, but this post uses the HGB reported 14,887 value for consistency.)

Tyche Shepherd's SL Grid Survey reports that, from 19 February to 19 March, the number of private estate regions changed from 16,683 to 16,629, a decrease of 54 regions.

Kitely's land area is now 89.52% of the land area covered by SL's private estate regions.

Current trendlines continue to suggest that Kitely's land area will overtake SL's private estate land area in June/July 2017.

How close is Kitely to matching the number of SL private regions?

Well, in HGB's April OpenSim Statistics report on 16 April, the number of standard region equivalents on Kitely was 15,216, an increase of 329 regions in the month since 17 March 2017.

Tyche Shepherd's SL Grid Survey reports that, from 19 March to 16 April, the number of private estate regions changed from 16,629 to 16,560, a decrease of 69 regions.

So the current difference in area is just 1344 regions.

Kitely's land area is now 91.88% of the land area covered by SL's private estate regions.
