hi Barnard - i am an old SLer too and i tried Reaction Grid (two diff ways), then we had our own server for two years, and now on Kitely
to me, and our needs, Kitely is about as perfect as i can imagine
the 15k per sim paradigm is a hard one to break (i had 19 sims inSL) and i can assure you that the higher limits work very well. i have a 16 region (4x4) world with 35,000 prims and just finished a single region with over 36,000 prims and both run very well
changing the SL paradigm in my head has been the biggest obstacle and even a few years later, i'm still finding places where SL is my reference point
good luck and i hope you find as much satisfaction as i have with both OpenSim and Kitely =)
