how to find 'unknown' virtual worlds?

Post by Chris Namaste »

:)
the reason i ask this is bc so many people buy from 'i donno what world-never heard of' etc,
we see always more n more worlds
also we dont have any idea what happens in those worlds,if we cannot go see them
if our products, our art,our creations, that, most of us, work & pay hard for & put our heart in - what becomes of them
ive had several ims of pple that saw 'same things i make' for free 'out there' just to pick up
which is totally illegal (as we all know)
anyway,
when we see, for exemple, a customer that buys for 'world xyz', how can we find those worlds?
thanksies,christa

Hi Chris,

You can't see the buyer's Grid URI, but you can tell the grid's stated name in your Sales History. Please note that this is the name that was provided by the server that is located at the Grid URI the buyer provided. It doesn't guarantee that this name isn't one that is also used by a different grid.

If the grid the buyer delivered the order to is well known then it may be mentioned online somewhere. You can try to Google that grid name to try to find its Grid URI.

Sadly there are some grids out there that allow their region owners "god powers", which means that that any restrictions you believed you had placed on your products can be stripped away. There is also the case of private stand-alone grids linked to OSGrid where the owners will also have god powers.

I'm not about to supply a list of grids here that i personally avoid for exactly these reasons, but the problem certainly exists. I think my question would be this: has any consideration ever been given by Kitely, specifically Kitely Market, to identifying the worst offenders and not permitting export to them?

Hi Christine,

Once an item has been delivered to ANY OpenSim grid outside Kitely we can't guarantee what will be done with it. People can easily move content between Hypergrid-connected grids and via OAR file exports. We can provide some measure of control for content creators using our export control system (see https://www.kitely.com/virtual-world-ne ... plemented/) but there is nothing anyone can do to protect content once it has been delivered to a different grid.

Even if we only allowed content to be delivered to a very short list of IP-protecting grids the person who delivered the content to these grids could still export it from them to other grids that don't respect IP rights. To avoid that you'd have to create a walled garden of grids that only allow connecting to each other and don't allow exporting content to OAR and IAR files that can later be uploaded to other grids.

The Hypergrid is an open system, which is its biggest benefit to the OpenSim ecosystem. But that openness also comes at the price of losing control over what can be done with content which you allow to be taken out to other grids.

thak u christine, thanks ilan,

yes i feel same as christine, everyone, basically, with ba di ntentions, can copy our items, therefore, it would b interesting to visit them, since there are so many its not do-able (not in my life anyway)

it would be not interesting, for us as creator, to choose 'only kitely' customers can buy (i would lose 90 percent of sales)

- what made me think : there are a few grids that kitely had blocked to teleport to bc of stolen items, never i saw somone buy fromthose grids, so i guess those are blocked to buy from kitely yes? if one of us woudl find our products copyd somewhere & we show this to kitely owners, can those grids be blocked to buy as well?

- thanks ilan : 'that this is the name that was provided by the server that is located at the Grid URI the buyer provided. It doesn't guarantee that this name isn't one that is also used by a different grid' this i did not know at all :s sad stuff (imo), it's a maze isnt it

- 'You can try to Google that grid name to try to find its Grid URI.' thats a good idea! (when i got the courage for it), thanksies

Hi Chris,

There are very few grids we've banned Hypergrid access and Kitely Market deliveries to. Those are grids that are owned by people who actively and publicly support IP theft. The reason we can't be more aggressive in what grids we ban is that almost all grids have unlicensed content uploaded to them or copied to them by people who travel the Hypergrid. Grids owned by responsible law abiding people quickly respond to DMCA and other IP violation notices that are sent to them (formal or informal). However, even those grids can have new unlicensed content added to them while they are working to remove what was reported. Banning such grids would result in Kitely needing to disconnect itself from the Hypergrid and stop delivery to all other grids.

Due to the aforementioned reasons, banning grids doesn't really stop IP theft. People illegally copybot content from SL and upload unlicensed content into SL and that is a walled garden grid that doesn't connect to any other virtual world. You can't prevent IP theft using available systems, you can only try to react to it and even then it's important to do so in a way that creates more good than harm.
