Lovely new map tiles

Post by Dot Matrix »

When I finally managed to log in after the update (I found that using a fairly simple world for initial entry seemed to help), I opened up the world map to TP to one of my other worlds.

The update has brought lovely new map tiles. Look at this:

Very nice-))

I had heard doing the better maptiles is a bit of an additional resource user, so this is nice to see.

Our blog post, which we plan to publish tomorrow, will describe some of the many improvements we rolled out today. For example, we now use Warp3D for maptile generation. It doesn't work properly on megaregions so we developed various OpenSim bug fixes to get it to work as expected on Advanced Megaregions.

As soon as I saw your picture above, Dot, I had to log in just to see my world on the map!

To me, THIS IS HUGE! I don't just play an explorer in my RP, I am truly a virtual world explorer and explorers love maps. Seriously, this causes one to WANT to explore... the old maps? - when you can't see what's there, it's hard to get enthused about exploring.
Eventually you give up and either go somewhere else (Second Life) where they have real maps and therefore exploring is much more fun...or you just don't explore as much as you used to or would like. End result: you don't spend as much time inworld as you could; you don't find interesting places that are out there because you can't see them...so you can't tell others about them or write about them.

I have heard people say they never look at the map or they can't read a map or, "Hey, does this map thingy do anything? Do I need this?"
So I know not everybody is going to care about this... but I think it's a big-time improvement and I don't think I'm going to be alone in that assessment.

This is one of those "little things" that make the whole virtual world experience better

Does this new system pick up mesh objects properly ?
I have several "prim equivalent" shapes on my map, although most of my nicest mesh objects are on my megaregion

We haven't tested Warp3D maps with mesh Dundridge, please do so and let us know.

That is how my region looks like. Almost everything at region is mesh, only "real" terrain is north part of region, where are some sculpties. It is funny how colors are changed at map:) I like it, it looks very artistic:)
Agree with Danko, all the little things make huge difference.

I did not try all the new features yet, but I am looking forward to it. Thanks for all the great work, Ilan and Oren:)

I was over at the Welcome Center earlier, and unfortunately, it isn't restricted to megaregions - the new map system doesn't work well with mesh, it displays the "prim equivalent" shape.

It's a vast improvement and works GREAT on prims though :D

Hi Dundridge,

Did you wait a few minutes to let the system send you an updated map? In other words did you get a new map with mesh not showing as desired or did it remain on the old map?

I get the new shiny maps with lots of lovely prim objects visible, and any mesh on the map shows as it would if the viewer did not support mesh.
