Live Music in Kitely - Performers, Venues, and Resources

Post by Tully McLeod »

At the Dec 11 Mentors' Meeting we had a discussion about what it would take to bring some live music events to Kitely.

I'm starting this thread as a place to track information on performers and venues, with the hope of bringing them together.

If you are a performer that would be interested in playing in Kitely, please post your contact information here.

Likewise, if you have a venue and would like to host events, let us know.

We are also looking for ideas and resources for things that will help facilitate such events, such as scripted instruments, performance animations, light and dance systems etc. If we are trying to lure performers from some other grids we need to be prepared to help them outfit avatars and find the equipment they need to put on a good show.

One thing that comes to my mind as I'm crafting a letter to send out to people that had performed at Shillelagh Hearth in SL, is payment. If these are people that are primarily in SL they may want to be paid in Lindens, which is doable, but not really convenient. Unless they plan to become permanent residents of Kitely (which I hope they will), KCs will be of little use to them. So I'm guessing real money is probably the best option.

Would it be possible for them to setup in the Kitely Market as a merchant and get paid directly through Paypal? Can you sell a service instead of a product in the Marketplace?

We initially planned to have a time-based events system (when we were just brainstorming Kitely in 2008) but we never got to it. Without us implementing a dedicated system the Kitely Market may be a feasible alternative but the sold item has to be an actual item not the service. However, selling an item that is part of a scripted system that joins you to a group is allowed. And setting world access to just members of a group is allowed.

Products need to be delivered for the Kitely Market transaction to complete. You could, for example, sell scripted ticket systems in the "Recreation and Entertainment" > "Event and Traffic Tools" category. Please note that as far as Kitely is concerned the payment is for the delivery of the item. If it's delivered then the buyer got what he or she paid for. The entertainer showing up for the show is a separate matter entirely that Kitely takes no responsibility for.

I'm working on an events system for my in-world computers and boards - adding ticket sales sounds like fun.

Alternatively, you can set the access of your world to pay mode, so you can receive credits while people are visiting (and reimburse in real money if you choose). This is usually unpopular :)

PS. Kitely is awesome.

I'm not worried about people paying me or the region owner so much, as the initial payment of performers that I might hire to come in and play. In SL I usually just paid them with Lindens. If we are getting new people to come to Kitely that aren't sure if they are going to spend much time here, paying them with KCs probably isn't what they want. Chances are though that they will have some kind of mechanism to just pay them via paypal or something, I was just musing on other possibilities.

Selling tickets to an event is an interesting idea, but it sounds as if it could be complicated and probably wouldn't be any more popular than setting the world to pay mode.

My son is a professional musician that has been writing, singing and touring for the last several years. He has produced 5 CDs so far and is very involved with the indie music scene in Canada. When I was involved with SL, I discussed the possibility of him playing inworld but never got around to doing it. Neither of us really have any idea of what would be involved in setting it up or had the time to put into making it happen. He would not have any interest in actually spending time here other than performing but I could probably cajole him into coming in for a show just to see what it it like. He has always been very curious about the whole thing but still thinks I am a little wacko for being in here! His music is more laid back and appeals to all ages, hard to put a label on it but it is not rock. His latest CD is called American Fiction and is available online in several venues, including iTunes. It wouldn't be so hard for him since he either plays solo or with a couple of backups in his band when he is on tour.

I also have a very good friend who I know would love to perform in here. She has performed for years and would put on an amazing show if we could set it up for her. I also have other friends and bands in the music business that are larger groups, which might be a little more involved. Also not sure if they would be so inclined to come here, although I can think of one that might!

I don't have a venue yet but have plans to put one together in the future :)

There have been some very successful streamed live shows iSL - the Studebaker John shows, for example, hosted by GRT (Thundergas Menges and JadaBright Pond), with browser on a prim - video streamed from a blues club in Chicago to various locations iSL such as Junkyard Blues and the Distillery, with tips collected, cashed out, and turned over to the RL performers - on at least one occasion exceeding the RL tips at the club. Good marketing for CD sales at his website, and the live performers can look at a screen at the club and see the virtual world avatars and their comments and applause. If anyone can figure out how to get tips from a Kitely world to a live performer, or even a great DJ, it'll change the world here, I think. Avoiding transactions in KC; these guys need cash. A scripted system to connect to a paypal account? Something like that. It has to be easy for the tippers.
