Upgrading World

Post by Xxaxx Constantine »

If we upgrade a world from 4 regions to 9 or 16, do we need to repopulate the world with object?

Or, is there some method to expand the # regions without destroying whatever world has gone into development.

Thanks,

One way is to save the current world as an OAR, then create a new expanded world by uploading the saved OAR. The OAR will fill the southwest regions, and the other regions in the expanded world will be blank. Then you can move the existing builds to new places.

Thank you for the reply.
Sounds great.

This is something new. SL doesn't seem to have any means of saving objects and their placement.
Apparently the OAR file will hold all my buildings including where I put them etc.

Is that so?

Thanks, Minethere -- that is a useful link, one I'm always consulting when trying something new with OAR files.

Yes -- in Kitely everything that you have placed that you have at least copy/transfer (or export) rights to will be saved to the OAR file.

You can reuse the saved OAR in Kitely, or on your own computer using Sim-on-a-Stick, or upload it to another OpenSim grid -- or simply keep it as a backup archive of your build so far, which is handy if something dreadful happens.

To save an OAR in Kitely costs 10 KC per region, so a 2x2 world will cost 40 KC.

It's very easy to do: Click the Manage button on the World page, then the Files tab. To save the OAR, click the Export World button. For a complex world, it will take a little time. When the process is complete, click the download link in the dialog box to save the OAR to your own computer (the OAR is kept available for download for a day on Kitely's servers).

The current rules for when content will be included in exported OAR files can be found here: http://www.kitely.com/virtual-world-new ... rmissions/

Once the Kitely Market opens to buyers, items sold from the Kitely Market will also have an Export flag attached to them. The value of this flag will override the export logic that is defined in the aforementioned link. This means that a full perm item that could have been exported if it didn't have the Export flag would not be exportable if the Export flag that is attached to the item is set to "No". Similarly, an item that couldn't have been exported based on the aforementioned Copy+Transfer perm requirement would be exportable if it has the Export flag and that flag is set to Yes.

I am wondering if there are thoughts on the possibility of charging for a backup copy of the oar kept on Kitely servers.

I am thinking is that merchants may set export to "no" to protect their intellectual property.

However, I would like to have a backup of my world.

If this backup was NOT on my computer, then there would be protection for the merchants and a backup for me.

Obviously this would have a charge. Maybe this is already happening.

Can you tell that I've had some monstrous oops moments in SL? "Did I just delete half the no copy cathedral I just purchased?"

Hi Xxaxx,

Kitely was designed to allow you to store as many worlds as you like in a way that they'll remain accessible to you and anyone else you want.

Making backups of your worlds and storing them on Kitely is therefor already possible:

1) Press the Copy button on the world's world page (or the Mange link next to the world's name in the My Worlds page).

2) Give the backup whatever name you want and press the Copy button.

3) Once the world has been created, press its Manage button (or link in the My Worlds page) to open that world's Manage World dialog.

4) In the Manage World dialog switch to the Access tab, set whatever access restrictions you want (e.g. only allowing yourself to enter that world), and press the Save button.

You can store as many worlds as you want in your account. If the regions in those worlds exceed your plan's free region quota then you'll be charged 10 KC / region / day for the excess regions.

If you ever want to download the OAR file of those worlds then use the aforementioned Export World function in the world's Manage World dialog (it's located inside the Files tab).

Note that items for which you do not have Copy permission won't be copied when you copy a world (they'll be automatically filtered out from the world copy).

Thanks for the response, and thanks to Kitely for having such a sane approach to the whole thing.

Is a warning issued if no-copy items are present?

PS: Given that you can't archive no-copy items from the Kitely Marketplace, is it also possible to request a region rollback?
