Polar texture losing detail and becoming pixelated

Hey everyone, still working on the casino for New Mos Eisley (grid.kitely.com:8002:New Mos Eisley)

I ran into an issue. I create a 4096x4096 image for the slot machine wheel, polarize it, then resize to 2048x2048 trying to preserve the details. I save it as a .TGA

As you can see from the image below, it looks like Bantha poo doo

Anyone have experience with placing textures on round surfaces without destroying the detail of the image?

p.s. these wheels will be spinning (rotate texture) so I don't believe planer textureing will work.

Thanks for any help!!

Well, I solved the polarized distortion issue. I had to sacrifice the shape of the object I was texturing. Instead of a hemisphere, it has to be a flat surface with no angles, which causes distortion. So the slot machine spinning wheels are now flat. But, I would rather have clean icons than a sloped surface, so one has to go.
