How many miles....

How many miles do we walk while landscaping?
I often wonder what distance or how many steps we walk, well, I walk. I can only speak for myself. While I am building and landscaping I always walk up and down the area I am working on to look at the scenery from different angles. Like today, I am working on a connection between main land and a little island. I must have walked down that piece of road 30 times or so, just to check, to see the light, the grass, the rocks, the setting... the water... I also often get catched by the beauty of what I created just a few seconds agoo. I can stand and look around for a few minutes to absorb and enjoy the atmosphere... While virtual, I find myself sucked into the environment and I am there, in the model, at the specific place, in the scenery. I am so happy I am able to build again;-)

This afternoon I asked my daughter (18) how this could be is possible at all. I was shaping a mountain and like always, I started without a plan or idea. It feels like clay most of the time, I start and the shapes just appear on my screen. I am soo amazed by the results despite I am the person triggering this. My daughter didn't get what I was trying to tell her but one day she will, I hope. Anyway, I just wanted to share my feelings today and I do hope you all find some of the magic while you are in your virtual world.

I think I go the opposite. I tend to use the camera to float around and look at things. I'll also fly to get a fresh angle or when I cam too far for finer control of the camera. But, then again, I don't terraform much. I search the 'Net for a terrain map and use that, building on the terrain as it is, with minimal smoothing and lowering. :)

Nice topic.

I always walk my terrains when I get down to the details/final passes on them. I find camming just does not show me the little things that I like to fix...smoothing and such. And I walk them for a few days before being satisfied, just to give myself a different perspective each day brings.

When creating regions with content, I do pretty much the same. While walking I cam around, and in and out, to see different perspectives.

In it all I want to try and see it from enough angles to have a pretty good idea of what others will see also. Never, of course, from their eyes, but I do try.

I am not to the minute details stage yet but I am working on my next [and likely last] free oar, Arrakis.

I like to cam as I build up the overall shape of the terrain, but then go in for a walk as I work on the details.

What would be good is if we could hook up a treadmill to the viewer and as we walk on the treadmill it walks in the virtual world. This could give us exercise, but it also could mean we could enjoy walks in fantastical environments. :)
