Creators set deadline for LL, then: "assertive action"

Post by Danko Whitfield »

In Second Life, the United Content Creators of SL - the group formed to protest the TOS changes of last August - has set a deadline for Linden Lab to act on their complaint or they will start "assertive action."

Today's statement reprinted on my blog...

Interesting stuff. Nice to contrast this committee approach with the reaction of the "Dis-united Content Creators of SL", many of whom have already picked up their marbles and gone home.... or at least have moved on to other grids. It will be fascinating to see what this "assertive action" entails when Linden Lab ignores their complaint.

I am glad to hear others are taking action. All I have been doing in SL since this broke is cleaning up old listings and putting out old odds and ends I had already uploaded. I was expecting a reaction in some way from LL but the fact that it has dragged on and on like this is really amazing.

The Lindens have never hidden the fact that they're all about the Benjamins - making as much money as possible from Second Life. But in the past they at least gave lip service to wanting to protect the copyrights of their content creators. The part that really confuses me about this whole TOS debacle is what LL hopes to gain from the changes. I can't see anyway that it would help their economic situation. But whatever it is that precipitated the TOS changes in the first place must still be in play. I suspect that if LL was going to back down they would have done so by now.

I remain fascinated at how this will shake out in the end.

To slightly sidetrack the thread, the thing that fascinates me is how this plus a few other factors will shake out in the long run. It really seems recently LL have been on a rampage to make things as difficult as possible for everyone. Some of it is not their fault of course, but some of it is. Lets look at just what has happened in the last year.

*LL Close down 3rd Party Exchanges
*LL Add the Draconian TOS
*LL Drop new tax documentation on merchants at last possible minute
*LL force viewer developers to drop opensim support or create separate viewers
*LL continue to allow their forums to be attacked by call girls from Mumbai
*Recent revelations that Cory Linden basically pitched SL to the military and NSA

All things together, even by our usual standards its been a hell of a year.

If I didn't know better, I would say they were trying to get rid of us ;)
