Devokan Storytellers Gathering: 2nd Sunday each month

Post by Dot Matrix »

It's time for another informal gathering for storytellers/storybuilders -- this Sunday, 13th July, at 4 pm UK time, 8 am Pacific.

We'll be meeting at the new Devokan, and maybe include a tour to take in the sights.

All welcome!

Paislee, Mat, Serene and myself attended July gathering on Sunday 13th July.

We started with a discussion of the concept of storybuilding in words, worlds and prims, and what makes a "Devokan" style build -- how the intention is to create beautiful, immersive worlds that people can enjoy exploring, or simply spending time in, for relaxation or refreshment.

A Devokan-style world may have "story" built in, quite often via small details or through recurring items or symbols across the worlds. However, the real, up-to-date story is made by visitors making sense of what they see -- a method used in the Myst games created by Cyan Worlds, for example, which have inspired many of us.

This means that no one needs to read reams of backstory, though it is available should they wish to (Devokan story archive). Instead, what matters is a visitor's reaction to the worlds as they exist, and the ideas they might spark in those who explore them. There is no "right answer", no central story, no single puzzle to solve. The worlds can be enjoyed just as they are, by wandering through them, maybe even getting lost.

The gathering then went on a tour of the builds in progress on Devokan the world, as imagined here on Kitely. We took in Paislee's personal Relto (sky island), and Mat's Relto with its strange machinery, and Ruby's Relto observatory. Then we moved on to the new Waysmeet, the tree village, a ground-level place for community and story-telling, with shared areas for games and conversations, and simple tree houses for writers seeking solitude.
