Voice is Back
We’re happy to announce that Kitely now supports full-featured WebRTC-based spatial voice! Longtime users will remember that Kitely was one of the first OpenSim grids to add Vivox voice. But Vivox started phasing out support for OpenSim grids in 2024 and Kitely, which had a special relationship with Vivox, lost its Vivox server a few months ago. To replace this loss we are switching to WebRTC, a voice technology that exists in modern viewers. Regular OpenSim supports WebRTC only in a very rudimentary form: for example, it doesn’t support spatial voice. So at Kitely we created a vastly improved version of WebRTC, which is feature-compatible with the full voice capabilities of Second Life.
Full Voice Support
You need Firestorm 7.1.10 or later to use WebRTC voice.
Voice works in: Parcels, Avatar-to-avatar calls, and Group calls.
You can control how loud you hear individual avatars, or even mute them completely.
Parcel Voice Supports 3D Positional Audio (“Spatial Voice”)

In parcels, we support spatial voice. That means avatars who are far away sound weaker. Also, you can hear the direction each avatar’s voice is coming from, so you can tell where speaking avatars are located relative to you.
You hear avatars who are up to 10 meters from you at full volume. If they are located between 10 meters and 60 meters then their voices will sound progressively weaker the further they are from you. You won’t hear them at all if they are more than 60 meters from your location.
If someone is annoying you then simply Mute them:

Avatar to Avatar Calls
You can have a private one-on-one voice conversation with other Kitely avatars across Kitely (but not with Hypergrid visitors):

Group Calls
If you want to talk privately with multiple people, you can start a group voice conversation:

Configurable Listening Position
You can choose whether to hear sound from the position of your avatar, or from the position of your camera:

Note that Kitely implements an anti-eavesdropping feature that prevents listening from the camera position if it’s more than 50 meters away from your avatar.
